VOR wagging GTN650XI/Dynon Skyview

The VOR will wobble on the ground at a VOR ground checkpoint (3 airports tested and same result) and in the air (various altitudes and distances from the VOR and multiple VORs tested). You can hear the Morse code crystal clear. Any suggestions on how to resolve this?

It appears both videos were taken at night. Have you tried turning off the wingtip lighting? Maybe interference from a switch mode LED driver picked up by a wingtip antenna? You also might try comparing to a handheld with VOR function.

Thanks Paige.

Today I tested it again and found that with or without lights/strobes etc. on the issue still persisted. I shut down the engine while on the ground and noticed that the wobble seemed to disappear making it stable after shut down. I am wondering if possibly one of the alternators is/contributing to the issue.

I brought along a handheld and it seemed to have issue with the signal as well with the engine running. I did not however run the engine and shut both alternators down.

Any thoughts?

Alternators don't typically produce that kind of noise emission. You should be looking at the ignition. I am guessing that one of hte plug wires has too high of a resistance. Do you have Pmags? Seems many have issues with the wires loosening off the coil tower. I would pull each plug wire and put an ohmmeter on them. Also insure each has a good solid connection on both sides.

Listen to the signal using the ID function of the 650 set to receive "voice". With the engine running, turn off your mags/electronic ignition one at a time and see if you can hear the interfering noise.
