SMOKE TEST PASSED! But I only ran it at first for about 3 seconds because the fuel pump is really noisy running dry. (I had forgotten to pull that fuse. I am worried that maybe it was TOO noisy but won't know until I run it with fuel.)
The Skyview setup went fine. I had gone through the installation/setup manual first but still - a few tips.
I did NOT notice if the panel bottom two fans ran during those brief 3 seconds. They were NOT running after I pulled the fuel pump fuse (pull fuses with everything OFF!)
My Skyview shipped with software 3.2.2.987
You have to input your N-Number as one of the 1st things.
If you have a reserved N-Number you also need to go to
http://registry.faa.gov/aircraftinquiry and put in that number and see what your MODE S CODE is. That is an OCTAL number. You then must convert it to hexadecimal (go to
http://www.trig-avionics.com/converter.html) for that and input it in the transponder setup screen. This is in the manual, by the way.
It DETECTED all of the modules - but NOT the autopilot servos. This is because they are powered by ships power. You have to turn on the Autopilot switch in the panel. All of the modules needed firmware upgrades which the D-1000 took care of when told to UPDATE them.
The DETECTED modules are on the Skyview setwork connection - the ADAHRS, EMS, and SERVOS, and D-1000 itself. The TRANSPONDER and GPS RECEIVER are NOT on that network, they are connected serially. So don't be surprised when they are not DETECTED.
Initially my GPS receiver did not work. Since it is connected serially, there is a screen that showed zero communications traffic to it. I checked the troubleshooting guide, then checked the DB9 connector. Sure enough, I had swapped the TX-RX wires. Fixed that and it almost instantly acquired position INSIDE a metal pole barn!
On my harness, the Skyview comes on with the master switch, not the avionics master. Makes sense. Transponder and Garmin are on the avionics master. Intercom too, probably - haven't checked.
So I decided to upgrade to the new Skyview 3.3 version and load in all of the latest maps, nav, and obstruction data. Also the config for the new engine fuel pressure sensor, and a Rotax engine layout page they (Dynon) have.
USB PROBLEM: I downloaded all of that from the Dynon website onto the Dynon USB stick (at the root level as instructed). I put it in the socket below the panel. The light on the stick came on but the Skyview never recognized it. Hmmm. I put the stick into one of the USB ports on the back of the D-1000 and it was recognized just fine. I think the harness is miswired to the USB socket (I didn't do THAT wiring!) and will have to check on that with Vans on Monday. The updates were fine but after the system software update you have to reboot a couple of times and DETECT everything again and, if memory serves, re-download new firmware to them. So I got to do that twice.
You get free use of the maps for 30 days with an annoying message box displayed on the screen I had not yet obtained my included license key from Dynon when I was doing this - I will get it on Monday. There is a blue sheet of paper with a code number you read to them along with your D-1000 serial number. They you input the license key into the Skyview.
THE SCREENS ARE BEAUTIFUL!
Note that the 2 fans on the back of the D-1000 never ran during this half hour or so. I presume they come on when needed, I intend to check the manual.
Very minor problems, this was a good day!
