RVators and the art of kindness

Some months ago I indicated hereon that I'd be moving back to Massachusetts to take care of my ailing sister for three months. That's when Mike Draper sent me a PM inviting me down to Plymouth for a flight. He knew that caregiving is murder on a person's soul.

It's been hard to get away because it's a sunup to sundown job and time isn't my own.

But my sister is doing well enough now that I felt confident telling her she was on her own and so today I drove down to meet Mike.

Long story short: Fabulous, perfect RV-8. Even more fabulous and perfect person.

I've never been in an 8 -- rides have been hard to come by since I sold my RV-7A in 2016 -- so we flew along the coast of Cape Cod, past the canal, up to Provincetown and down the Atlantic side across Hyannis and back home.

It's been a long time since I've made a new RV pal but I couldn't ask for a better one and a better day.

Given that it's been awhile since you've flown an RV, you managed the stick well from the back seat.

The sight picture from the back seat of an 8 was really interesting and terribly foreign to me . I only did a couple of clearing turns to see if using points on the forward canopy frame would work as an HSI. Sort of, yes, but you lose the center reference so while I could gauge the steepness of the turn, I didn't really have a reference to the nose so I had to pay attention to what my rear end was telling me and my tush is a notorious liar!

Other than that, it responded just as I remembered RVs do.

I got so much done, the biggest thing being that I was able to confirm that the behind-the-ear hearing aids will allow me to hear the radio and intercom fine. I had just in-the-ear hearing aids the last time I flew and they're designed to cut out with a headset on. So I was very concerned about that. It was good to get that sorted out.

If we come to Truro next summer, Mike, maybe you could hop over to P-town to say "hey". Otherwise I'll see you at OSH.
