Formation Clinics?

The title says it all. I’ve been watching here, hoping to see announcements of upcoming formation clinics. So far, I haven’t seen anything.

Any news?
Have only seen one announced recently. (~3-week old announcement)

FORMATION CLINIC 10/11-10/13 KESN airport. EASTON, MARYLAND

I posted this late last year and I guess it got lost during the VAF site format change as it didn’t get any traction. Please read below….

I’ve signed up and I’m hoping we can get more RV pilots to sign up

Hello All:

Trying to get a head start and attract some RV formation pilots to sign up and attend this fantastic event in 2024. I’ve attended this before, but because of the lack of RVs attending, I was I unable to participate in any formation flying. I know it seems a long ways away, but time flies… So put it on your calendar and Sign up!

As I’ve posted before, this is a very well run event with many experienced formation pilots that attend; mostly T-34s as of late, but many Yaks and Epsilons also attend.

Please check out the link and instructions from the organizer below and plan to attend!

The T-34 Association has offered the use of their website’s ability to get you registered for the event and pay your event fee in advance. The event fee will be $75/person to cover all four days of the event.

You do NOT need to join the T-34 Association to sign up via their website.

Go to https://www.t-34.com/

Scroll down to the bottom right of the home page and press the “All Events” button.

Scroll down to find the Chicken Drop 2024 event.

On the right side of the page press the “Register Now” button.

If you are not a T-34 Association member just ignore the area labeled “Are you a member of the T-34 Association”.

Just fill in the boxes as required and complete the registration.

Make sure you list your exact aircraft type and your FAST qualifications.

Pray for good weather!!!

Get your hotel reservation ASAP!!!!!

Signing up, I've been looking for formation clinics on the east coast. Just hope Mt Toberfest isn't the same weekend :(.

Only a few groups host the clinics. Most that I know of fill up before they are even public including the one we have done the past 2 years. It is a balancing act of finding the resources to host the clinics as well as bringing in new/mostly new (aka red scary) or just unknown experience level in.

We plan to host one again in the fall, but the timing of it will depend on our show schedule and availability of the core group.

Many years ago, I took part in a clinic aimed at getting people ready for B2OSH. Some guy (not JUST some guy, but a guy, whose name I’ve forgotten) talked to an FBO to arrange room for ground school, and got several people with Bonanza and T-34 formation experience (FFI and/or FAST) to come and serve as safety pilots.

Given that there’s apparent interest from new people, who have no chance of attending a clinic that fills before it’s publicized, it seems there would be room for such a thing — say, a dozen pilots meeting in Peoria for a weekend. The big question is safety pilots. How hard would it be to convince a handful of FFI-carded people to show up for something like that?

Of course, there’d be issues of insurance, liability, etc. I think B2OSH has a corporate umbrella for that stuff. Maybe someone like EAA would be helpful?

Every formation clinic I have seen has had some kind of "Liability Release" form that had to be signed before anything happened.

Talk to your local RV FFI guys to see if you can get a ride along with one of them. They may be able to help get you up to speed.

All the RV FFI guys train to the same document. Read it. Learn it. Ask your local RV FFI guys to answer your questions. Things you have a hard time understanding, ask the local RV FFI guys to demonstrate it for you.

All the documents that the RV FFI guys use can be found on the FFI website.

I'm not aware of any FFI guys locally. There are a dozen flying RV's, but I do all of my formation flying off the wing of a Marchetti.

I don't understand it.

Hi Stu, I am an experienced RV formation pilot (not carded) that has participated in many clinics. I'm based in Sheridan on the north side of Indy and have also been looking for other in the area to fly formation with. I'll send you a private message.
