Fiberglass work on elevator tips

For those who did not build a show plane, did you fill in at the aluminum to flush or make the two surfaces finish out level to each other?

I just started working on this myself. I do not plan on making a show plane, but I do want to minimize the visibility of the joint. I'm mostly just using epoxy and flox to fill the gap, and then sanding and priming smooth. not difficult, just time consuming waiting for the epoxy to cure
 
I deliberately made a small even gap so that the paint does not bridge the parts and possibly crack due to differential expansion of the materials.
