D-sub thumb screws

Thumb or just retaining screws. Not the question. The screws used to hold the D-sub to it's mate. Personally, I don't like or trust them so the D-subs in my plane with a mate are lashed together as well as screws. Heat shrink would work well too, but waxed lashing string is easy to snip off and easy to install.

Question.
Which gender gets the nuts and which gets the screws?
I see connectors both ways depending on what was panel installed in the magic box. The mate always has the screws and it may be male or female.

I've seen componenets from the factory with male and thumb screws on the end device. I install them in the airplane that way. Male with screws at the servo for example. Female on the equipment end. Same orientation if there is a junction. My lights are the only cable with a mid span junction. That's my standard in the airplane.

Anyway, is there a standard?
