Magnetometer location?

I'm pretty much hooked on putting an Advanced flight system EFIS in my -8. I'm looking for ideas on where to mount the magnetometer. On back top side of F-808? front top side of F-809? They say keep it 2 feet from cables or any steel. Thanks Lyle

I have the GRT and mounted my magnetometer in the wing tip on the outer rib about 2ft aft of the Nav/Strobe lights which are in the tip leading edge. To further isolate the magnetometer, I angled the Nav/Strobe wires forward at about the third rib inboard from the tip.

Build a shelf on the outboard side of the outer rib.

If you're early into the build, you can make a shelf behind the baggage compartment bulkhead quite easily.

Others may have better ideas!

Use a compass

Several builders have drawings and advice on where they put their magnometers. I don't know if my method was accurate or not, but I used a compass to attempt to get an accurate heading, and then moved the compass closer to any surroundings to see if the needled changed.

In the tail

Installed mine in the 3rd former back, aft of the baggage compartment. Have the GRT & ran the cable down the left side.

right choice

After 200 hours with my AFS EFIS , I don't think you could make a better choice. BTW, the map feature is worth the $.

I put my magnetometer just in front of the HS attach on my RV-6. Works perfect.

I was recently in Conroe, TX and asked Denis McCright the GRT rep where to put the magnetometer. He indicated the shelf in the fuselage was the preferred location for him. I have also seen them in the wing tip.

dynon magnatometer

For those with a dynon magnatometer mounted on the upper bulkhead. Is a 90 degree shelf directly off the bulk head adequate or is there a pitch adjustment required to line in up vertically with the panel unit? Dynon instuctions state it should be within +/- 1 degree. How much adjustment should be built into the bracket. Thanks

I have seen where some people have located the magnatometer on the aft deck forward of the horizonal stabilizer. Is that a good location or is it too close to the rudder cables and other metal attaching the rudder?

How about mounting location in the -10?

With an HID powerpack at each wing mounted Duckworks light, a VOR antenna in each wingtip, I'm wondering where people with -10's are mounting the magnetometer and how? Pics are always appreciated.

Hey Doug, it seems to be a theme of people asking how to mount things...do you think there's a way we could just start making another bucket of mounts for parking brakes, AHRS, magnetometers, fiberglass tricks, and other common gizmoids or do you think the search function is adequate? I like what you've been doing daily by posting model specific questions and answers on the front page...that's what led me to this idea.

I put mine out on the wingtip using the Remote Compass Mount from SafeAir1 (link). Instructions were excellent and it was easy to do.
