What phillips bit do you use?

Ben RV12is

I'm New Here
Hello Everyone;

Looking for advise, probably a dumb question but......

I am having a problem trying to screw in the bolts with Phillips head that go through the bottom fuse skin to create the studs to hold the fuel line plastic holders.

Wondering what size bit is required for those bolts. I have tried several but when it gets tighter i am stripping the head.

Thanks

Ben

I wipe the screw threads against a stick of the wax-like Boelube before installing. But nothing beats a good driver.

+1 for Vessel screwdrivers. I like their removable bit inserts, and the green-handled fixed-blade drivers.

The other trick is to buy Japanese Industrial Standard bits instead of Phillips. JIS bits will drive a Phillips without stripping as easily. Get JIS sizes #1, #2, and maybe #3 and you'll be set.

Phillips

I don't remember exactly the size but I think I used a #2 Phillips bit from Snap-On. They're called Phillips "ACR" bits (trademark name) and have grooves in the bit that tend to grab the screw and keep the bit from camming out. They've worked well for me on the 8-32 stainless screws on RV-12. Oh, by the way the little tiny bits cost $4.41 each the last time I checked.

I have found that the JIS screwdrivers work best. I have tried the grit coated Phillips bits and they are a little bit better, but not as good as JIS bits or screwdrivers. Also using some Beolube like Bob Turner recommends above helps.

I'm not sure what size screws you are trying to drive, as I don't recognize the part number (I am an RV-10 builder, and haven't run across these.
These aren't rivnuts are they?

No matter which type bit you use (I like the JIS type), add a dab of valve-grinding compound to the tip of the bit to improve the screwdriver's grip on the screw.

These were recommended in a prior thread, believe it was Walt who mentioned them.

Really good grip and long lasting, thumbs up :D

For screwdrivers, Stein has a really nice set of JIS units that work really well, but are probably for a smaller screw size than you are looking for. https://www.steinair.com/product/6-pc-precision-screwdriver-set/

I love the JIS screwdrivers, however I don’t believe the Stein air ones here are JIS..

BOSCH CCP2205 5-Piece 2 In. Extra Hard P2 Point, Phillips Power Bit

These have the ACR ridges that grip the screw. They work so well that sometimes the screw is lightly stuck to the bit after removing the screw.
$7.67 per five pack.

The same winning form shape but more robust

Edited; I didn't see it's a pack of 10 at Amazon vs 1 at HD sorry

I refuse to use anything other than an ACR bit. Typically I will buy the cheapest ones that I can find.

Gary that's the best one. I still have a couple of similar serrated ones from a SnapOn truck I bought in Princeton New Jersey. Around the same year I visited you in PA :D

so, a couple things are going on with a favorite bit. one is material, finish, etc that makes the bit grip but the other are the dimensions of the bit. i think the jis shape is superior to the american shape. get the best made bit and make it jis.

In addition to all the bits mentioned, a ratcheting screwdriver helps a ton. Each time you ratchet back, the bit resets in the screw. Really makes a difference. Love the Snap-On ones but there are other good ones out there for less. Wera seems to work well.
