A third category might be useful, something along the lines of "On Condition". My Lycoming is 23 years old with a little over 2,300 hours on it and it still runs great, has good compression, isn't making any metal and has no other symptoms that an overhaul is needed.

I do know, however, that it is closer to needing an overhaul now than it was 10 years ago, but, as the saying goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Mine is at 2+ recommended TBO and runs like a champ Lycoming makes great motors. Really hate to remove it but the warranty for a factory new still in the box already started :)

The calendar overhaul really relates to commercially operated engines. The EAB and private fraternity have always operated on condition.

Calendar and hours overhaul can all be extended in accordance with Lycoming information - depends on model spec.
