O-360 fuel system builder mod - opinions?

Hi group. I'm embarking on a builder mod for my fuel system and wanted to run it by the group for opinions. The reasons are to locate the floscan transducer on the cabin side of the firewall and to filter my fuel out of the tanks before it gets to the facet pump or floscan.

I'm using the fuel filter that airflow performance includes in the F.I. pump package for RV's for my carb engine. However, my filter will have a 74 micron screen which is a bit tighter than the 125 of airflow performance. The routing will be:

Fuel selector - inline flow ezy filter - Facet pump (relocated off the firewall back by the selector - much like F.I. installations) - 12" straight tube - Floscan transducer (located on floor of center tunnel area ) - Tube run to gascolator - engine. All tube runs at the selector, filter and pump will be large radius bends and not 90 degree fittings to avoid cavitation (similar to F.I. installation). I plan to build a little dog house over the pump as in the F.I. installs.

I searched the archives and found posts from the 2000 - 2001 time frame concerning this but not much since.

For newer members the archives are a must read! http://www.matronics.com/search/

Thanks,

Jeff

Jeff,

This should work just fine. A number of the Rocket builders (including me) have exactly the same setup as you describe (minus the gascolator) and it works great. You might give some consideration to dropping the gascolator. I know it's hard to give up on these old things, but I think you'll eventually find that they don't do much. Your filter will trap anything that the gascolator will. However, even if you keep it, you should be fine.

Good points!

Randy,

I appreciate your thoughts. I had just finished checking out Vince Frazier's site http://www.usi.edu/science/chemistry/vfrazier/page1.html and a few F.I. RVers and saw how they ran the fuel feed through the firewall using the facet fuel pump pad as a nice doubler for the fittings.

I'm going to drop the Gascolator as you suggest after reviewing these sites as it could serve to induce air leaks, fuel leaks, etc. into the system. It will just increase the tubing length in my system with more failure points and no benefit. Also, the RV-7 gascolator location call out is not low enough on the firewall to put it below the wing tank sumps anyway.

Others, check out Randy's site - Cool stuff! http://www.pflanzer-aviation.com/
