VM 1000 Warning!

For any of you with a flying VM 1000 or plans to install one, listen up
and save yourself a lot of lost time and aggravation brought about by
someone's incredible stupidity.

If you elect to purchase their latest software as an upgrade, you will
receive an EPROM to install in the data processing unit (DPU). The
EPROM is a piece of hardware that contains the new software. There are
no instructions for installing the EPROM but far more important, there
is no advisory that unless you make another change in the DPU at the
same time, your engine RPM will read twice what it should!

Incredibly, when I called to ask where the EPROM was supposed to be
installed and how to do it, they made no mention of the fact that a
jumper has to be changed in the same box at the same time. To get the
DPU out of my -8A, I have to pull the entire panel and it takes several
hours to R&R. I was willing to do this once to install the new software
but not twice...

When I put everything back together again and attempted to do a flight
check, I immediately noticed that the engine was showing 1600 RPM at
idle. I did a quick runup by sound and concluded that the instrument
was showing about twice what it should have. A call to Vision
Microsystems resulted in the comment, "oh, yes, that is a known issue
but isn't too hard to fix. First, take the back off of the DPU..." I
stopped the conversation right then and there and explained that I had
just spent most of a day doing just that to change the software and had
everything reinstalled. When I asked the tech (Marcus) why they had not
sent out instructions with every software upgrade they sell, he merely
said, "it was an oversight."

In my book, that oversight ought to be followed up by an email, letter or
phone call to every purchaser of the software so they can be notified of
this problem. Evidently they don't see it that way since they are not
notifying anyone. So if you ever have to change the software in a VM
1000, make absolutely sure that you call the factory first and find out
just what else you have to do inside the box while you're there. It
will save you a lot of anguish that should never have been necessary in
the first place.

Feel free to forward this to other lists if you wish. I'd really hate to have anyone else go through this nonsense.

RV-8A, 620 hours

Bill,
I am surprised you had this problem. I have had a VM-1000 in my RV-8 for 4+ years, 500+ hours. There were a couple features that I wished for and talked with Lance about it every chance I got. One day I got a call from Lance asking if I would Beta test the new software. The directions for installing the new chip were good but I experienced the double RPM issue. A call and the required jumper change fixed the issue. If I remember correctly, it is only an issue with electronic ignition? As part of my report on the testing, I included that this needs to be added to the directions.

A year or so later Lance sent me yet another upgrade which I installed with no issues.

Overall, I have been very happy with the unit and the support I have recieved from the company. I had a number of issues in the begining, all due to marginal connections I made. Dave, the tech rep not only told me how to trouble shoot the problem but on a couple occations even correctly predicted which wire had the bad connection.

I highly recommend the product and hope things have not gone downhill since the merger.

VM-1000 Upgrades

The first upgrade I installed in May 02, provided for RS232 fuel flow outputs to a GPS. It also cahnged teh RPM sensitivity to 5 RPM (a requirement for some government agency) and sampling rates to smooth the RPM readout.

The second (ver. 2.001), in Aug 04 provided the ability to change the "K" factor to fine tune the fuel flow computer and the ability to change the low fuel warning from the factory 10 gallons. I the sampling rate or algorithm on EGT was also changed to provide easier operations in "Lean" mode.

I don't know when either upgrade became standard but it should be easy to tell which you have.

Can it take resistive fuel senders

A friend is battling to make his VM1000 work on an RV4.
I believe it is one of the earlier models without any updates done.
The question is if it is supposed to work on standard resistive sender units.

I have gathered more info now.
It seems like the VM1000 cannot read fuel levels, but that the VM1000C can read capacitive as well as resistive.

vm-1000 dpu wiring diagram

Hello everyone
Does anyone of you have a copy of the DPU wiring diagram that they could send me.

I've just been asked via e-mail by someone looking for one so if you have one, I will be able to send it to this person.

Thank you for your help.
