Converting 540 dual magneto to use single standard magneto

digidocs

I'm looking at a 540 engine with a Bendix D2000 dual magneto and I'm wondering if it's possible to install a single standard mag in place of the dual magneto.

Update:
The dual 540 drive turns at 0.75:1 vs. 1.5:1 for the single mag. The question then becomes, is it possible to retrofit a different accessory case? Just keep half of the dual mag around?

Thanks for the help,
David

See this link for how I did it to an O-360. Yours might be different but call Aaron who is listed in the doc.

WOW!! What a great report!!

I have an O-360-A1F6D and at last condition inspection had the mag overhauled, so I am pretty comfortable with it. BUT, if I ever decide to convert to a single mag and electronic ignition, your report is stored and will be carefully referenced. Thanks for the time and effort to make and share it.

I agree that your report is indeed excellent.

I spoke with Aaron and he confirmed that the 540 has a different drive ratio for the dual and single mags (0.75:1 vs. 1.5:1). No drop in replacement 0-360 style.
