Anyone know where they posts the results of the Airventure Cup Race?
I have looked everywhere but under the kitchen sink!!
:D

It will take a while I guess

Your Friends Waybe Hadath and Tom Martin in Race 14 and 109 did well I think. I heard them calling the finish while I was still over Minnesota. I think Chris Murphy is going to try to get a copy of the results to Mike Thompson which he will post on www.sportairrace.org. As soon as I get anything if it hasn't been posted already I will post it here. Bob Mills Is there and he did well also I think flying with his young son Cory so he may feed back some information. EAA has not been big on reporting the results since Jack Cox retired. The are having a traditional celebration dinner tonight and traditionally Eric Whyte passes out results there. I flew home after refueling at the Dodge County airport near the finish line in Wisconsin so I don't know anything about the results yet.

Thanks Bob. Guess i'll just have to wait and see.
How did the race go for you?
i know Tom went to 17500, and Bob was at 15500(followed Bob on aprs) but also hear a lot stayed lower as the winds were light.
On a side note, I have been doing some mods to oil cooler exit airflow. results look promising for reducing some drag inside the cowling and it looks like i may have picked up 2-3 knots. But the race in august will be the definitive test. Sure hope you can make it up for Tom's race in August.

Well, we'll just have to wait and see

I studied the wind forecasts like everyone else and they were disappointing. Down at the surface there was very little wind and along the course was shown as a cross wind from the north. As you progressed up the altitudes you had to go to the 12,000 forecast before the wind swung around to the point that it was kind of on the tail. I didn't check the higher altitudes seriously because I didn't have supplemental oxygen on board. As you proceeded east toward the finish the forecast shows the wind more directly out of the west with a velocity of 10 to 15 mph. That's what the forecast showed so my plan was to turn to 081 degrees, climb at 500 fpm with wide open throttle, max rpm, leaning as I go to 11,500 trim for hands off level flight, lock in the Altrak for the long straight cruise, then 63 miles from the finish, start down at 500 fpm.

How it actually played out was not perfect. The ground speed during the climb out was 170 kts which I saw as a good thing. When I leveled off at 11,500 the ground speed went up to 188kts, occasionally the ground speed would hit 190 but it would drop back to a steady 188. I had the feeling that I might have done better if I had leveled off at 9,500 ft but you have to plan the flight and fly the plan if you are to have any chance of doing well. I kept visualizing the wind chart that showed the improving winds in the latter part of the race. Just the opposite happened - the wind died and even became a slight head wind in the final one third of the race at 11,500 ft. Then the plan for maximizing the use of the potential energy during the long descent was blow by mid level clouds. I had to start down at 85 miles from the finish to make sure I would have a straight line into the finish. Not only did I have to start down early but I had to really burn the altitude to get down under the clouds. It was a high speed trip at 205 kts but it was over way too soon.

Time will tell how good my speed was relative to the other RV Blue airplanes.

Bob, Gary, gang:

Just waking up on our first morning in OSH, and glad you received the results for AVC! Mike also probably received them from Chris, and is probably calculating the points and then will post them on the SARL website.

It was a great race...very well run by Eric and the staff, and very well run by all the racers.

The results were pretty darn fast, despite the nearly complete lack of tailwinds. There were many strategies employed, but the real challenge was to choose an altitude, and choose how you were going to climb to it, and when you were going to descend...how one flew the race really made a difference in these conditions, and Bob, your comment about "plan the flight, fly the plan" is spot on here. We had 8 racers over 300 mph, and Marty Abbott of Canada set a new AVC top speed record of 401.09 mph in his Garrett TPE-331 powered Turbine Legend. Paul Tackabury ran 344.59 mph in his turbocharged Lancair IV to take the unlimited class, Lee Behel (a Reno Racer) took the Sport LX (Lancair Legacy class) in 331.16 mph...and had the best fly-by's in Mitchell, IMHO. Harry Hinckley took the Sport Class in 312.36 mph, and Tom Martin outgunned the rest of us in Sport FX class by a margin, winning with a 262.21 mph...in a fixed gear airplane (F1 EVO Rocket). Bruce and Steve Hammer had the first ever tie in the Formula FX Blue class...OK they were in the same airplane...but we all figure they were fighting each other on the rudders to try to yaw the airplane to make their side finish first...or lean forward to win by a nose! :p They ran 255.74 mph in another fixed gear airplane (Glassair III TD), down on the deck where the wind was almost nil, and at times a headwind.

In the RV classes, there was some great racing. Dave Anders and John Huft battled it out in the new RV Gold class, with Dave running 240.58 mph in his highly modified RV-4, and John running 232.42 mph in his highly modded and super-fast RV-8. Dave ran the race at 9500, but I forgot to ask John where he ran...but I know he said he was going to go as fast as he could, and climb at 100 fpm until he saw the max groundspeed, and then when it started to drop, go back to where it was fastest. Not sure where he leveled off, but will try to find out.

In RV Blue, six racers ran over 200 mph! Bob, you were so close to a trophy, with only six seconds between you and Tom Moore...after 376 miles. That's so close, as you know!

In RV Red, Chris Murphy and Bob Vasey battled it out in their RV-4s, with Chris winning at 199.09...another 4 banger RV at nearly 200 mph!

There were two mechanicals, with a Lancair 360 having a failed starter solenoid at the start, and a KR doing a precautionary landing for an unusual smell in the cockpit. The KR landed in case it was a smoke-like smell, but it had disappeared quickly, and after checking the airplane out, he continued and finished, with no further incident. The start crew stayed with the Lancair, helped him swap his solenoid, then launched him and followed in the support plane to Fon Du Lac.

For race strategy...Gary, I know you saw where Tom and I were. Launch order in Sport FX was Tom, Wayne, Mark, then me. Tom ran right to 17,500, where he had a slightly better wind than the three others at lower altitudes. We started at 11,500, and then climbed for better winds, with Mark and I stopping at 15.5, and Wayne trying 17.5. The three of us were in sight of each other much of the way. Wayne didn't like it at 17.5 with his Sport Wing (RV-like wing, same one I have), so he ran back down to 11.5, then went lower. Mark and I stayed at 15.5, and with the EVO wing, Mark slowly pulled ahead of me...to perhaps 2 miles ahead.

As you mentioned Bob, the winds were supposed to get better as we went east, but that never materialized. The forecast was also for headwinds down low on the east part of the course, and I think that did occur.

Tom Started down about 110 miles out from the finish due to the clouds, and said he wished he'd waited. My plan was to get as high as I could, and stay there as long as I could, then descend at 1000 fpm to the finish. When Wayne didn't like 17.5, Mark and I stayed at 15.5, and Wayne went on the hunt for winds and speed down lower...which cost him (he usually beats me!) I tried to warn him about the headwinds down low!! :)

Mark's plan was similar to mine, and he and Tom pointed out my math error on Top of Decent calculations, or I may have started down too late. I chased Mark down, but lost sight as we worked through the scattered puffys between 7K and 3K, then picked him up a few miles from the finish and chased him in, closing to about 1.3 miles behind him. Somehow I was able to make up a little ground in the decscent and the cloud dodging, and finished in 4 seconds longer and 0.15 knots slower than him. We've now traded back and forth in 3 consecutive races, and have a great time running against each other (and chasing Tom and Wayne!) Wayne said he was happy to have "given" us this race, especially me, since it was my first AVC! Said something under his breath about throttling back...ahem...yeah right Wayne! ;) Then he chugged 3 or 4 beers and we all laughed and enjoyed the awards banquet! :D

Our planes are all still at Fon Dul Lac, and hopefully this morning, they will have opened up parking for us here at OSH, so we can go git 'em and fly them here! We're remaining flexible, but I hope we can get the racers to the show soon, and celebrate with the rest of the RV gang.

The race was great fun, and looking forward to seeing everyone here! Bob, it was a real pleasure to meet you and run in a race with you. Glad you are home safe and sound, and my best to Jeanine...I'm sure the AVC was not quite the same for all without her in Bluebird! Next year!! :)

Cheers,
Bob

Thanks for the update Bob, next time can you put in some details !!:D

Yeah, yeah, I know...comm brevity in posts...not always my strong suit...different in the plane ;). Just have fun painting the picture here (especially for you guys up north that still have no TV, only radio!) :p

Love the writeup Bob

At least the yanks are showing good taste! :D

On the OSH front, after a bit of negotiation between the AVC chairman and the OSH bosses, we were cut loose to bring the airplanes to OSH. Most of us are now parked near show center by the Air Race hooch (small covered gazebo with racing pylons), which is on the grass facing 36R, between Aeroshell Square and OSH Tower. If you're out here, please come by and say hi, or just scope out the airplanes. (There are some really nice planes in the group).

Oh yeah, one little post-race tidbit...Mark Frederick (aka F1Boss) has developed this nice little habit of holding up four fingers every time we see each other (reference our finish times)...hmmm...I just reply with one finger (we're number one!)

We strolled the ranks of RVs, and saw some great planes...Doug R's beautiful (now) red Rocket, Don M's "HUD-equipped" RV-8, an RV-4 with a slider and raised turtledeck, and many great looking machines. Also saw DR's airplane out in front of Garmin-world...need to come back and get a closer look...and hopefully say hello!

Things seem to be picking up very nicely! Hope to see many of you out here...now to put on more sunscreen!

Cheers,
Bob

Official time difference between RV Blue Class 3rd and 4th Place

Six seconds. Oh well it was an adventure and Tom just out ran me. Close but no trophy. I feel your pain Wayne. Maybe next time.

Bob,

Its interesting to note that the RV-Blue class was perhaps the most competitive, in terms of race times. A good opportunity for others to get involved next year.

As Bob Mills points out, the light winds had people flying a wide range of altitudes. John Huft went to 17,500, which resulted in some tailwind but also a lower TAS (plus time spent in climb). I went to the other extreme, flying most of the race below 3000. I think the Hammer brothers did the same. This worked well for the first 50 miles or so, but unfortunately the headwind was stronger than expected in the latter half. Jon Ross was in the middle, around 10,000-11,000 I believe. I'm not sure there was any "right answer".

Overall another fun event; the crowd at Mitchell was especially impressive. There was one kid who was getting all the racers to autograph his copy of the program!

Heading home tomorrow as soon as the weather permits. The cup race was really good this year. I flew the race at 5500 feet until the last 70 miles. I was hoping to break 200mph but the plane was loaded with fuel. I tried to pick an alt. that gave me the best TAS and the least headwind/most tailwind. I was able to stay ahead of Dave B's Sidewinder until I dropped down. ( He is usually much faster than me)

The race tent is set up really nice this year, please go by and check it out.
