Default Help: Interfacing the FS 450 with a Garmin 496

I need some help with the interface of the FS 450 and my 496. I have followed the instructions on the JPI website but can't seem to get the 450 to show REQ or RES. The lights don't even come on. Has anyone had success with this set up? Do I have to do anything on the 496 to get it to push the data to the FS450? I have set the destination and activated the flight plan, guidance starts and drives the autopilot.

Info from the JPI website:

Interfacing the FS 450 with a Garmin GPSMAP 196/296/396/496:

The FS 450/460 (Twin) and the Garmin 196/296/396/496 must share a common ground

No EDM programming needed

RS232 Output > NMEA-183 Out

Thanks for your help.
