Vicksburg

Planning a trip to SC sometime in Feb. Want to stop in Vicksburg for a day and see some of the historic sites and maybe travel to Nachez. Any RVers in the area of anyone have any tips for where to stay or getting around?

Ravennaside

The wife and I stayed at the Ravennaside B&B in Natchez several years ago. We really enjoyed it. The civil war park in Vicksburg is worth seeing. Natchez is smaller and has less modern development. It has many antebellum homes worth seeing. I like the octagonal house named Longwood. The Yankee carpenters "got out of Dodge" when war was declared and the basement level was the only one ever finished. So, the post and beam construction is visible on the upper levels. And some of the carpenter's tools are still there. John

My wife's from Vbg (we lived there for a couple of years after we got married), & I have cousins in Natchez.

Check notams and/or call ahead if you're planning on landing at TVR (LA side of the river); the river's up. The old Vicksburg Airport (VKS) has a nice funky old vibe, but ask ahead about rental cars, etc.

For a B&B, check out Duff Green or McRaven.

Food: for buffet or menu, Walnut Hills. Haven't been there yet, but locals recommend Rusty's Riverfront Grill. Overlooking the river, 10 South Rooftop Bar & Grill (roof of a downtown building). For tamales, Solly's on Washington ST downtown (don't let the location & decor scare you off). The Biscuit Company often has live music at night, and the food's good.

For historic sites, obviously the Military Park; don't miss the Cairo gunboat while in the park. I think the park now has in-car audio tours now. Old courthouse museum is downtown. Once in town, everything on the list will be <10 minutes by car from everything else.

Casinos are historically bad... But that's redundant, I guess.

In Natchez:

Concordia Parish Airport might be closer than Natchez-Adams Co.

The Eola Hotel is kinda cool, if you like old historic places to stay. The rooms will be small, though. It's all about staying somewhere historic.

Biscuits & Blues was good the last time we ate there, but it's been at least 5 years.

There are dozens of antibellem homes but I can't be much help with which ones to see.

Hope that's a good start.

If you have time, stop in at Slobovia (MS71) just north of Jackson & we'll take you to eat catfish at **** of the Walk.

All of the Vicksburg hotels seemed reasonably priced and well protected.

This is the cannon guarding the Hampton Inn. :)

Don't miss the USS Cairo at the National Park.

We used the Vicksburg airport and were treated well by a friendly staff.
