Reno ILS 16R

I'm hoping some one based at RNO or who flies there can answer this.

Last month's IMC meeting had a discussion about lettered ILS approaches and included RNO ILS X 16R and ILS Z 16R. When I examined the approach plates, both of the transitions of ILS X are included in ILS Z and all the other notes and procedures are identical. So the question is, why does ILS X exist?

I called NORCAL approach and was told it was because of aircraft equipment but that person couldn't explain further. I've tried to call RNO tower and have left messages but have not connected.

Any ideas are appreciated.

Thanks

The ILS Z approach uses RNP with RF (radius to fix) transitions. Most aircraft are not equipped for RNP.
