Thumbs up Eagle's Nest Projects - WFAA (ABC Dallas) Features McKinney HS Students

Richard Rensing and Erica Swenson are McKinney ISD high school seniors, Eagle's Nest Projects build-students, and are the only two students in McKinney ISD to earn a Private Pilot license before graduation. With a burning passion for flying and their RV-12 build project still under construction, these outstanding students went the extra mile in pursuit of their chosen career and partnered with Monarch Aviation and LeTourneau for their flight training. Please share a warm VAF welcome with Richard and Erica.

McKinney Boyd High School senior Richard Rensing has never felt quite like this.

ďItís an extreme love,Ē he said.

Ever since catching the love bug, his head has been in the clouds. Heís so in love that he doesnít want to come back down to Earth because the view is just too good.

ďSome kids donít even have their driverís license still and theyíre seniors. Let alone a pilotís license,Ē he said.

Richard and his classmate Erica Swenson are students in the McKinney ISD Aviation Academy. The program was started in 2011 to teach students the history of planes, how to work on them, and how to fly them.

Nearly 500 kids have gone through the program, but in six years not one had ever gotten their pilotís license while still in high school.

That is, until Erica got hers in December and Richard followed with his in February.

ďItís kinda like, ĎOh, they let me do this. Iím allowed to fly airplanes,íĒ Swenson said.

Theyíre the only high school pilots in all of McKinney ISD. Their instructor, Todd Curtis, says itís not only incredibly impressive, itís necessary.

ďThe workforce is actually aging rapidly and itís not being replaced by younger, new pilots,Ē Curtis said.

Erica and Richard have a big head start on that career, but they donít plan on working. Because when youíve fallen for something this hard, itís simply a labor of love.
