Cheaper gas, too! The extra distance isn't all that much, and your appreciative viewship would be infinitely greater than at EKO.

John,

Thanks for jumping in...maybe we can work something out!

I did a quick look at it in Weathermeister, and looks like the OGD-EKO-RTS distance is 371, and the OGD-EUL-RTS distance is 530. 160nm extra's not too bad, but I need to check with my chase pilots in each location (each day one will follow me to each fuel stop, and the other will meet me at the stop and chase me to the RON, thus I'm spending their gas as well as RV-1 gas).

Will touch base with the Stead reception coordinators too, and see how the time looks. Wx may be a factor too, but we can be flexible.

All that being said though, I would love to hook up with RVators in the area! Looking at the map, what if I head your way out of OGD, and we meet in someplace like Twin Falls or Jackpot, and have a fly-in get together? Is there a place a little closer to on course that you and the Idaho bros would be up for converging on? Open to any ideas you have!

Thanks much, and lets keep this conversation going.

Cheers,
Bob

Thumbs up

Bob,
I can't speak for anyone else, but your sked looks good to me.
Let's hope the weather, etc., cooperates.

The TDZ EAA gang is well practiced by having a great flyin
breakfast every month all summer.
That plus having nearly 900 members in the OhioValley RVators
in the greater area should generate some interaction.

Tom

Cheers,
Bob

Bob,

If you can't stretch to KEUL, KTWF (Twin Falls, ID) would be better than Jackpot. It has an honest-to-God FBO, plenty of ramp space and a terminal building cafe. There is at least one crew/courtesy car. Fueling at Jackpot is comparative hassle.

From TWF bee line to KWMC. You and chase can form up, lead yak with Cowboy Control if the Owyhee MOAs are hot. CC'll be more than happy to issue vectors to the F-15s/18s at play, and record your gun kill (good luck).

Default Lee's Summit, MO (KLXT) Tour Stop

Plans for the May 29 tour stop in Lee's Summit include:

Escort by EAA Chapter 91 (and KC Flight formation team) pilots from Peoria, IL to KLXT. Bill Gill (RV-7) will fly lead and Keith Schult (RV6A) will fly wing.

Approx 2pm Arrival at KLXT.

After refuel, maintenance checks, etc. we'll have photo ops on the KLXT ramp. We're arranging photographers to take photos/assist with personal cameras...I'm also working on a bucket truck so we can get some elevated shots of a group "formation" on the ramp. We'll do the photos in the EAA 91 main hangar if we have inclement weather.

Flight ops by KC Flight are TBD at this point, but knowing the team they will do some formation demos if the weather permits.

We'll have our EAA 91 hangar meeting room open with a photo display of the RV-1 available for viewing and all three of our EAA 91 hangars will be open for tour.

After photo ops we'll move the RV1 into the main EAA 91 hangar.

We'll have a BBQ dinner beginning at 6:30 pm at the main EAA 91 hangar. This will be run as a fundraiser for "Friends of the RV-1" (NOTE: reservations required! Contact me if you plan to attend!). I'll buy enough BBQ and beverages based on reservations from VAF members, local EAA chapters, etc. Dinner price will include a 20 percent donation with all proceeds to "Friends of the RV-1.") Other donations accepted at the door!

I've asked Bob Mills to give a brief talk at the dinner about what it's like to fly the RV-1 and do a bit of Q&A. We'll have projector and computer hooked up and will also have a slide show of the restoration available as well as Internet to show any other photos/videos, etc.

We'll continue with social time after Bob's talk...with actual end time based on morning departure schedule/weather

The RV1 will depart on 30 May enroute to Norton, KS (KNRN) with escort by EAA 91/KC Flight pilots (Bill Gill (RV-7 w/XM weather) flight lead.

Main Point of Contact for this event is your's truly.

Contact me via email with reservations for the BBQ or questions regarding photos, etc.

See you there!

Mike

Any info would be appreciated.

Paul and Tom,

Would you two be willing to honcho a mid-morning to lunchtime git together at TDZ? Simple is OK, but it would be great to share the -1 there with the Ohio Valley gang and anyone else that can stop in.

If so, I'll add you to my e-mail list of Barnstorming stop coordinators, and we can flesh out some details that way, and post them here. Basic idea would be a post-customs/pre-launch for Elkhart reception wherever you feel would work well there. If weather is cooperating (not looming up) we can probably spend a couple hours with the gang there!

Having a bit of trouble with hotel internet and my e-mail client, so will get you the e-mail from tonight's airline overnight.

Pls lemme know if you're game...thanks!

John,

Do you think TWF would garner a decent-sized group? I'd love to include Idaho in the tour, so if you think it would be a good draw, we can make it happen. Also, would you be willing to honcho a simple gathering there? I know its not your home field, and its a fuel stop versus an overnight, but if we can share the -1 with lots of folks there and have some fun, its well worth it. Let me know what ya think. Will add you to the tour coordinators list as well, if you're game.

And if you can play GCI for me while we go hunting for Mt. Home fighters, I'm all in! (Just kidding Paul and Louise...I'll beeline for Winnemucca...that makes the last leg 300nm...might need to stop in WMC, just to get the kinks out on day 5, eh!)

If we do add TWF, that will mean the Barnstorming Tour will stop in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, and Nevada, on its way to California...cool!

Cheers,
Bob

Mike,

Thanks for doing such a great job on the LXT stop...sounds like a great event there!! Nice work!

A couple quick updates:

Fuel stop and rendezvous with Bill and Keith on 5/29 is now Marshall County, IL (C-75). A bit further than Peoria, so maybe we can give some of the mileage back the next day, to share the load.

Looking at the Kansas stop, looks like Russell and Hill City have the best prices in the area. Russell would be shorter for the KC Flight guys, and share some of the load with Gringo and his Denver team.

I haven't heard any input from Kansas area RVers, so if there's any preference for RSL or HLC as a fuel stop and meet and greet location, local Kansans, please chime in! Lookin' for some Jayhawk feedback!

Lots of great discussion here, and as the thread gets longer, some of the info can get buried. However, we'll put together a nice summary as it gets close to launch time for the Barnstorming Tour, and get in on the RV-1 website (and perhaps DR can add it to the VAF events page when its solid and closer-in! )

Thanks all!

Cheers,
Bob

We (EAA 582 @ TDZ) would love to host as many people as want to come. I will reach out to Tom to see what we can coordinate.

Tom, can you PM me your email address or other preferred communication mechanism?

We are definitely game and I expect, weather permitting, we could have a nice group show up.

I just KNEW we gave the Barnstorming Tour to the right guy.....

Louise and I are just going to sit back and watch Bob continue to organize this incredible part of the RV-1 Tour. To be honest, we might just have to meet up with you guys in Kansas City for a day, just to do a QC check on all the fun!

Bob,

Coordination with EAA Ch-582 is underway.

Rick Gray is putting the RV-1 UFO @ TDZ
in our OVRV calandar for 5/28.

We'll do some more contacts in May with
our OVRV sub groups, IE: Keystone Flight,
Heartland Flight, Wright Flight, etc.

Should be a great time,
Tom

Bob,

I'd be honored to help with a TWF stop. Question in my mind is what head count makes the deviation worth while?

Gimme a number for "decent-sized", "good draw", and "lots of folks". In Idaho, that's two or three people The Wasatch Front (including OGD) in UT is ~2.5M. All of ID is ~1.6M and a chunk of them are up in the panhandle. Those on the upper Snake can just as easily go to OGD as TWF.

I suggest starting a Yahoo groups or some such for planners/coordinators. This thread will descend into VAF quicksand and will have to be searched out for those of use who may not visit for days.
