Flying to Las Vegas, NV airports

And what about Jean (0L7)? The runway looks to be walking distance to the casino (and prison!) there. Anyone know the condition of the runways, tie-down fees (if any), etc?

What's the latest intel on RV-Friendly Vegas airports? Any leads on available hangar space in a couple weeks?

Go to McCarran Noah you will have something to remember and your Boeing will like the attention. No taxis to/from the airport no hassle. Park at Atlantic and enjoy your stay. Book Motel6 behind your plane if you want to save :)

Jean

I like Jean and use to skydive there a lot. You can walk to the hotel/casino. I have not been in a few years but heard that the have a 10 or 15$ landing fee now.

follow up

Just to follow up from my earlier post. I flew in to Henderson with my son. We didn't have time to gamble (he is under age too). but stopped and had a bite to eat. The trip to the strip would have cost me, no more freebies. jean has a casino right near the airport, but it is far from the Las Vegas strip.
I think McCarran is the way to go.
When I left, I headed due west over the solar farm; this was bright and distracting. If heading in or out from the west I would definitively be on flight following to avoid problems with the glare from the farm.

Next time, I will leave Henderson and head north just to get a view of the strip before heading west.

Jean has a $15.00 landing fee now. I called last week since I have an overnight trip to Primm, NV next month and was hoping the fee would provide some sort of overnight security.....at least a perimeter fence or something. Ahhh.....NEGATIVE. Tie it down and hope for the best is what I learned my $15.00 provides.:(

Thanks Vlad. My little sister lives in Vegas, she's a bartender at the Belagio so hopefully I'll be able to do better than Motel 6. ;)

I'll be there in a couple weeks

I Flew in to North Las Vegas last year, and it was fine place to land. Tower was very busy when we arrived on a Monday afternoon. We came in from the east on the Cortez route through the class B. Even though KVGT was very busy, approach really wasn't. Great views of the strip, and McCarran, but I was a little too busy to gawk for very long.

We had an Avis rental delivered to the airport. We're doing the same trip in 2 weeks and will plan the same arrival to KVGT. No landing fee that I remember, and no tie down fee thanks to a generous VAF member (see earlier post), although I'm going to gladly leave him an addition to his liquor cabinet when I show up this time. Airnav seems to indicate parking is $15 a night, w/ 1 night waived with a 20 gal fuel purchase.

I haven't been to Henderson or Jean (or McCarran) but North Las Vegas worked well for me.

Any RV activity near Vegas this week?

My wife and I are in Las Vegas for the rest of this week and weekend - she has a professional conference to attend, and I have, well, a bunch of free time on my hands. Unfortunately we had to ride the big iron here instead of our 9A.

I know it's not much notice but figured I'd see if there was anyone nearby who wanted to meet up and talk RVs for a bit. We're staying on the strip but I wouldn't mind grabbing a cab to one of the nearby airports to get away from the hubbub. If there's anyone building, I can buck a pretty good rivet too :D

Henderson still advertises the free shuttle on the airport web site -

Complimentary shuttle service to the Las Vegas Strip and surrounding hotel/casinos is available and departs at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. daily. Reservations are required and can be made via Unicom 122.95 or by calling 702-261-4800 one hour prior to your arrival.

We used it a few years ago... free one way, but $50 for the return trip.

Actually, that's not too bad at $25 each way for a destination 14 miles away.

The Henderson EAA1300 chapter meets for breakfast each Saturday 9 AM, I believe. I've attended a couple of times as a visitor. Nice group.

re eaa1300 breakfast at khnd

We normally meet Saturday at 8am at the landings restaurant upstairs terminal khnd. This Saturday 9-19 three planes going to Sedona for fly-in. Still might be a few show up at khnd. Everyone welcome.
If you're around Sunday give me a call 70 two 278 zero 273.

Kurt

turns out no one is going to Sedona, so I will be going to breakfast at the landings(KHND) 8am today (9-19). Hope you can make it.

Revived old thread

Any updates on Vegas baby?

I am thinking of flying in saturday for a quick lunch (not staying). I will be coming from LA area.

Do they still allow the strip transition into VGT?

Since I will be spending a long weekend there in september to do the grand canyon/ brice canyon tour, this is a precussor to get a feel for VGT and figuring how to get around.

Any updates to this thread is most appreciated.

Looks like north las vegas and henderson are closed to transient aircraft though september 30, 2023.

Is vegas that busy?

I fly into VGT four or five times a year and this is the first I have seen this NOTAM. However, it just requires prior permission. I'd call 702-261-7775 (listed on the Notam). I bet you will get permission to land.

I called them

I called them (VGT) and they basically said parking is filling up. They have an online form to fill out to secure a parking spot. The fee is only for really special weekends, like labor day, and the opening weekend of the sphere on Sept 29. The NOTAM is only for Sept, but the lady said it will probably be extended thru October due to Raiders games and such.

Never thought Vegas would be turning away people. They need an airport out Summerlin’s way.

Yeah - I was going to fly in there (VGT) to visit Crow this week, and when I called, I must have gotten someone who hadn’t had their morning coffee….the message I got was that they didn’t want me on their ramp with a little plane that was only going to need 12 gallons of fuel…. I put the trip off to another time! Heck, I could drive there from Big Bear in less time than it takes me to drive from Big Bear to the coast….

Public use

Sorry Doug for breaking the rules….

This really is interfering with interstate commerce and should not be allowed. As a public use and public owned airport, they should accommodate all who want to travel.

Don't be put off by the PPR requirement. It has been going on several months now, and it just means going on the website to get a PPR number. Takes about 30 seconds.

Last I heard, although the PPR NOTAM makes you think otherwise, PPR does not apply to VFR aircraft.

I couldn't imagine people coming here for the F1 this early but you never know. That whole thing has been one nightmare on us locals.

It’s my understanding that the NOTAM is both from expected traffic for both the upcoming F1 race but also the opening of the “Sphere” thing and associated concerts. I’m based at VGT, the ramp doesn’t look any more full than normal. You call the number on the NOTAM, it directs you to the online website to get a PPR number. No big deal.

To answer PilotjohnS, you might get a strip tour if they allow it. Make sure you sound like a professional on the radio with quick yet clear transmissions. I ask for it “if able” and if coming from the west, request direct to the stadium, then northbound to vgt. Let then know you’ll stay west of the highway. They’ll usually approve it at 3000 feet. Another option is that they’ll vector you south of LAS, then east, then north, towards the “Spaghetti Bowl” (VPVSB on the chart) making a tour over the east side of the strip.

If you want, a slightly different option is to circle the Hoover Dam at 4000 to 4500, monitor 120.65 as per the chart, self announce your position, then call approach for your tour over to the Strat into VGT. You’ll want to have the ATIS already copied before you even get into the valley, as it is a very small area and stuff happens quick.

If landing at BVU, self serve is OTS. Might have full serve fuel, not sure…

We stopped in Vegas last week on the way to visit friends in Oregon. Landed at KVBU in Boulder City very convenient to the Grand Canyon. Unfortunately Hillary's clouds made it so we couldnt do the Grand Canyon fly over. We stayed at Sams Town and the uber ride was 30.00 . I asked the driver what was the ride charge from Henderson and he said about the same. Gas was a little higher than Henderson and their self serve pump was being worked on. Tie Down fee was 5.00 . Very quite and very little traffic.

While I have never been to VGT I flew into Henderson last year and it was phenomenal! I believe I had to get a PPR then too. Was no big deal.
