Military paint job - roundel size?

If you have a military style paint job what size roundels did you use on the fuselage? The wings?

Thanks!

Roundels

Are you looking for US, UK, other? And what year are you targeting?

If you are going to make unit markings on your emp, then I would recommend roundels be about 1.5x the size of your letters. I'm putting 12 inch letters on my Rocket, and 18 inch tall stars and bars look very proportionate. This scheme almost completely fills between the tail and canopy. My stars and bars are 18 tall by 28 wide. this size is almost too big for a taper wing, but might be just right for a hershey bar.

John,
This website will give you the proper colors by country/service/time period:
http://www.jpsmodell.de/dc/main_e.htm

This website will give you information on the proper dimensions for USA stars and bars and neutrality stars:
http://www.bowersflybaby.com/stories/army_paint.html

This one will give you the details for RAF roundels:
http://www.homepages.mcb.net/bones/Aviation/roundels/RAF_Roundels.htm

And if you REALLY want to get anal about it, this one will give you the FS code numbers for USA military colors so your painter can get the exact colors:
http://www.ipmsstockholm.org/colorcharts/stuff_eng_colorcharts_us.htm

As Doc said, for the stock RV wing, 24" diameter for the outer circle around the star is good. 18" diameter for the fuselage is good. Tapered EVO winged Rockets may need a little smaller.

Hope this helps!

The roundel on my RV-8 wing is 29.75" ... you may notice that my mockup had the insignia centered between the leading edge of the wing and the leading edge of the aileron but the painter corrected it to bee closer to centered between the leading and trailing edge of the wing (within reason).

Go to Craig Vincent's sight. He is also on here.
I used the biggest he made and went to 40" custom stars
And bars for wings.
36 or 39" for fuselage.
Very easy to put on and Craig sells the sets.

General rule of thumb is, two-thirds the size of the area your going to put it in.

E.T.A. A size that works well is 21 inch diameter.

Spec 24102-G

From a really great Monogram Modeling book on markings, the wing insignia was 3/4 of the Available Chord, with the available chord being from the leading edge to the wing/aileron line. Spanwise, it was located 1/8th of the span from the tip. For the fuselage, the size of the insignia was 3/4 fuselage height, at a point half way between the trailing edge of the wing, and leading edge of horizontal stab.

This ought to get you pretty close.
