Default Sky Harbor

Andi and I headed north in search of beaches and dinner Saturday night. A quick convo with the Duluth airport manager informed me that there were nice Bikes at Sky Harbor - we needed to check them out!

It is a nice little flight up over the solar farm and oil tanks.....You can see the airport on the lake just past the tanks.....

Nice view of the big lake!

They load the big boats with ore here.....

Nice beach, cold water.......

Got the bikes! Painted like Earl Schieb, leave the windows down, paint the inside for free!

Pretty 4.5 mile ride into the dining district.....

Continued.........

Default Sky Harbor - part 2

We had some chips, a salad, and then enjoyed the ride back to the ramp.
Crossed the lift bridge on the ride......

They did a nice job on the rivets, just few smilies....

The sun was peeking thru a the front edge of a storm, time to go!

The Jumbo Margarita did her in........

Pretty night to fly......

Nice little trip! Moonrise on the left.....

Sunset on the right!

Any other interesting places to visit in northern MN and WI post-OSH? Duluth/Superior is already on the radar for a couple of excursion trains and paddling. I'm looking northward towards Boundary Waters and east towards Apostle Islands, but most airports serve towns too small for rental car outfits.

Great memories Pete!

When I was a (very) young licensed pilot in High School, I'd convince three other friends to chip in, rent a Cherokee, and fly up to Sky Harbor. We'd get a Duluth friend to pick us up and take us in to town for dinner, then be back in the Cities by 10:00 pm, and be in school the next morning. It beat hanging out at the New Brighton Dairy Queen.....

Funny, I was just looking at Duluth this AM as a trip destination.

Airnav says the Sky Harbor runway is "asphalt, in poor condition
CRACKS IN RY CAUSE ROUGH RIDE"

How is the runway?

It is not great, but I have landed on worse.

When I had the 7a, my wife wasn't much of a flyer, but Sky Harbor and a picnic on the beach was one of the few destinations that she'd hope in the plane in a second (also Madeline Island).

Such a great spot. It's like Minnesota's own Meigs Field.

But, man, be careful of the traffic coming up from KSUX. Especially that old guy with the amphib.
