if you fly into madeline island it is several miles into town and you are are on your own thru the woods [blacktop road]. a few bikes at the airport that didn't look like they were roadworthy since the 80's. we hitched a ride into town on the very lightly traveled road and it is definitely a tourist destination, serviced by the ferry from bayfield. walk back to the airport or stick your head into a little shop and offer $10 for a ride back to the airport .
it is a definite tourist destination but they don't have the airport in mind.

When we went up there a few years ago, we rented scooters to drive around the island. They scooter shop was happy to pick us up at the airport when we got there, and drop us off when we were done.
Some pics of the trip (with none of the promised write-up!)

But, Sky Harbor in Duluth is one of our favorite quick daytrip destinations!
