Rear Pilot Cockpit

Dear all,

I am currently working abroad and thus I cant work on my 8. So
I am planning my future instrument panel. I really would like to
add a panel for the co pilot but I barely can find pictures of people
who have already done it. I am quite sure that I will use a Garmin
G3X Touch 10" in the front and now I had the idea of installing a
7" display for the guy/girl in the backseat. Unfortunately I have
no idea how much space there is. Does someone have a detailed
picture or could take a one?

Thank you very much.

Cheers,
Yves

Ipad or tablet

Each of the major manufacturers of experimental avionics is introducing wi-fi compatibility with tablets or Ipads. I think Garmin does this with the the Garmin Pilot ap. So for about 1/10 the cost you get all the capability you need in the rear seat. GPS Moving map, AHRS, and EFIS.

Rear pilot

I gotta ask why ? An IPad or old -96 Garmin should provide ample information for the rear seat if needed .

This is my solution. GRT EFIS extra display provides a fully functional MFD for the back seater.

A couple of possibilities:

GRT have a blue tooth option that allows you to use an Android phone or tablet as a slaved display.

The Garmin G5 is only about 2" deep with a bright display, but would need pitot and static hook up to display air data.

You need to keep a check that it doesn't foul the rear stick travel.
A tablet on a RAM mount is an easily adjusted and removable option.

Rv 8 Rear seat instrument panel

I have made a small panel on which I have mounted a Dynon D2...and an Iphone 6 Plus mobile phone.....using the provided mounts that come with each of these devices...the Dynon D2 gives ...airspeed...altitude...GPS track...and has a very good inbuilt AHRS giving attitude display..airspeed and altitude are gps derived...but the rear seat pilot can easily look over my left and right shoulders for a comparison with my pitot static derived gauges....The Iphone 6 Plus gives a full GPS/chart/flight plan/weather displays with aircraft tracking...frequencies etc etc..(Oz Runways)...With a throttle...rudder pedals and access to the selected radio...A very simple system ...that keeps the rear seat pilot fully in the loop!!.............

Thank you for all your response!

The idea behind installing a G3X display in the back and not a tablet is the following:

I have already the rear seat rudder pedals and a rear throttle thus I want to give
the person in the rear seat the full possibility to operate the aircraft. With the G3X
display in the back it would also be possible to change frequencies, the squawk,
the flight plan and operate the autopilot.

The other idea is, as already suggested, installing a tablet as a copy of
the display in the front.

For time being I am just looking for possibilities. Maybe I will start with
a Tablet with the option to add a G3X display later (but already plan the
cable harness routing).

Cheers Yves

@Skylor: Thank you for showing your nice solution. I have already seen it
live when I visited you in November but I forgot to take a picture :)

Yves,

Go with the NEW Garmin G5! It gives you backup ARHS for the front seat G3 touch. Won't be able to change freq's but you get a lot of band for the buck and it is small enough to mount back there. Heck! You can add a cannon plug and make it removable.

Jack,

I wanted to use the G5 as a backup for the front seat :)

Summary:

G3X 7" Display:
+ Frequency and squawk change possible
+ Flightplan change possible
+ Map
+ EFIS
+ G-Meter
- Big
- Expensive (3000$)

G5:
+ Small
+ Full EFIS
+ Not as expensive (1200$)
- No freq or squawk change
- No flightplan change possible
- no Map
- Pitot/Static tubing needed
- no G- Meter

Tablet:
+ Cheapest (<600$)
+ Full Copy of front EFIS
- No freq or squawk change
- No flightplan change possible
