Aveo Lights - Lenses Yellowing

WingsOnWheels

So, I have a set of Aveo Powerburst lights I purchased a good 5+ years ago (yeah, I know....slow build). Since that time, they have been stored indoors in the Aveo box. They have only been out of the box a few times, so very little UV exposure.

When I pulled them out recently to finish up the last bit of wing wiring, It was very obvious that the lenses have yellowed significantly. Has anyone else had this issue with Aveo lights? Lucky for my I am paining my wingtips blue so it won't be as obvious. If the tips were white they would stand out like a sore thumb.

Colin,

Mine are about 4 years old, slow build as well, and they have been installed on the aircraft for about 3 1/2 years. They still look as clear as new. Sun shines in through the windows so they do get some UV exposure. Everything in my windows has faded.

Im starting to wonder in I got a bad batch. Or had some kind of exposure from the box material....ill have to shoot a note to Aveo and see. They are way out of warranty, but who knows.

My original AVEOS all yellowed. They replaced them but not without a fight. New ones not yellowed yet.

My Aveo lights are at least 5 years old and no yellowing yet. They are mounted but not yet flying. I think mine are an early early version. You can see them here.

Those are quite nice, but they look like the Ultra Galactica currently listed for $1,263 on ACS, unless there's an EXP version I'm missing: https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/elpages/ultragalactica.php?clickkey=5779

Seems non-yellowing versions are an upgrade :)

I had the same experience with my original AVEO Powerburst lights. The "rep" I talked to at a Sun-N-Fun told me it was my fault for not waxing them every month. I was not a happy camper. I bought the newer versions, allegedly these don't yellow, when they gave me a substantial credit by returning the old ones. That was back in 2016 so lets see how these newer designed ones hold up. Up to now they have been fine.

I emailed Aevo, and received a response today. The said to send my current set back and they will replace them with the new polycarbonate product (the older ones are a resin lens). This is good news to me. They stepped right up without any heave push on my end.

Aveo Yellow Fix

Same yellowing happened on ours after ~3 years outside in a tie-down.

I wished I would have thought to reach out to Aveo and get them replaced -- that would have been easier ;-).

This is what we did:

Sand them down with 400-600-800 wet sand paper

(left light is sanded down; right light is old, showing crazing/yellowing on the top sunny side only)

Then we bought this stuff for $10 on Amazon

And WOW it made them like new! And now with UV protection (that we're told wasn't part of the factory resin )

Timely post

Mine are 6 or so years old and are yellowed (always hangared). Going
to go the restored route on the airplane.

I hadn't heard anything from Aveo for a few weeks, so I e-mailed them the week before the holiday. They said my new lights would be mailed on the 13th. Haven't received anything yet, but I'll wait a bit more before I bother them again.

Considering my lights hadn't seen the sun for more than a total of 10minutes in their life, there may have been problems beyond UV protection.

I received my new lights from Aveo yesterday. They are very nice, a significant upgrade from the old lights. The heat sink is much larger, the base is solid metal and the attach screws do not clamp on the lens, but rather a metal insert screwed into the base. The lens looks like a molded part rather than cast resin. On top of all that, the base gasket is now rubber rather than foam and the wires have support where they enter the light. It is a night and day improvement in the design. This whole situation worked out to my advantage in the end.

I pulled these images off the internet, but you can see the difference:

I applaud your counter clutter, oxothnk: pints and coffee! Uppers and downers!

Ordered that liquid magic bean stuff from Amazon for my lights, thanks for the link (already have the wet sand papers in a multitude of grits).
