Wet Compass?

I was looking at the Stein Air Facebook page and noticed a panel for a Canadian RV with a wet compass on the far right side. Is a wet compass required in Canada or is he just old school?

Wet Compass

Required.
549.13 Equipment and Instruments
Unless otherwise indicated in the applicable subchapter, aircraft shall have the following serviceable and functioning equipment and instruments, as a minimum:
(b) Flight & Navigation Instruments:

(1) An airspeed indicator.

(2) An altimeter.

(3) A magnetic compass.

I would think a magnetometer would be accepted too. Isn't a compass just a simple magnetometer?

There was another thread (Canada related) on this a while back and, if I recall, it came down to the person inspecting your plane. Some installed an old style compass just in case the inspector required it and later removed said compass.

Been discussed many times here, we call it a magnetic direction indicator, many ways to interpret it, like mentioned , it depends on the inspector, it shouldn't but it does. Another discussion is should you have one for backup?
