RV10 Tail Cone Questions

I am stumped on how a piece goes together. Since Van's is close right now, was hoping someone out there knows the answer so I can keep moving tonight.

Page 10-8, Step 1, when putting the aft bottom skin (F-1079) onto assembly, I'm not sure I have it sitting right. As I read the instructions, I THINK it's supposed to go UNDER the the side skins. But, I cannot get a few of the holes at the bottom of the bulk head to line up. So, I think maybe the aft skin should goe ON TOP of the side skins????? But not sure.

Here's a pic of how I have it now with it under the side skins. Would someone be able to tell be if I have it backwards?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Under is correct. Holes in areas where skins wrap over each other can be hard to align. One suggestion is to use an awl or center punch to help align the difficult holes.

I started this last week and had problems getting the holes in the F-1011 bulkhead to line up with the skins. Contacted Van's and they suggested adjusting the tabs along the curved portion of F-1011 to get it to sit lower. The ends of the tabs where hitting the skins preventing the bulkhead from lining properly. I used a deburring wheel to take material off the end of the tabs giving them a better radius. Be careful not to take too much off.

Also, as delivered, the skin is not curved enough. I used a couple of small cargo straps to overbend the skin until the springback left me with a curve that would just about perfectly lay on the framework. This is what you want to achieve; you should not have to fight to pull the part into place. Ditto with things like the leading and trailing edges of the wing and empennage. I know that the old-style trailing edges (bent rather than riveted) could not be bent to final position until the interior structure (stringers) were added but too many people then just pulled the front closed to the skeleton, leaving stresses built in, while Van's instructions advised final-bending until the parts lay on the skeleton with no or little force. Bend in little increments and you can get a pretty good fit here.

Blue

All mating and match drilling should be done with blue plastic removed.

Think you'll find it fits better.

Thanks Mike!!! I took parts apart and buffed a better radius on the flanges as suggested. WOW! What a difference that made. Skins fit like a glove now (see pic) and cleco's slid in easily after adjustment. Thanks for the advice. Very helpful!!
