Heat exchanger location, RV-8A, M1B engine

After completion of the engine baffling kit from Van's, the next step was to install a Vetterman exhaust system designed for a M1B horizontal induction engine. To my dismay, I discovered the exhaust instructions call for installing the heat exchanger on the #1 cylinder down tube. This requires the fresh air inlet to be relocated to the inlet ramp in front of cylinder # 1. It also requires a long run of scat tubing back to the fire wall. Has this set up proven to be effective?

Looking for an alternate solution, I'm wondering if anyone has had success installing the heat exchanger on the #4 exhaust tube (M1B engine, 8A airframe?) There appears to be enough room, at least with the engine at rest (1/4 to 3/8 inch.) Am I just asking for trouble?
