Yep. The new portable units are completely plug and play with the GDL 39 connector and harness. I don't know about the R models but wouldn't be surprised if they have the same pin assignments in the Dsub connector. For the portable bare wire data cables I have seen them being referring to as "GDL cable" dropping the 39 reference from it since it is identical for the 5x series. Forward compatibility makes an upgrade simple and hard to resist.

My GDL 52 has a more stable attitude signal than my old GDL 39 3D which was a little wonky. The 52's Bluetooth works fine with my aera 660's and Bose A20 headsets. And the auto-off function on the 5x has rendered my remote off switch for the GDL 39 battery into a "spare" on the panel.

As far as signal strength I installed a GDL 52R in a friend's Mooney aft of the baggage area (radio rack area). Had to use a GMA 57X on top of the fuselage and a transponder antenna on the belly. While not an ideal Bluetooth signal location we have had no problems with reception up front.

Default Bluetooth drop out

I had the GDL39 Bluetooth dropout issues some time ago and If I remember correctly it was fixed by a firmware update.

One small item that I find disappointing with the GDL 52 is that with respect to music out via Bluetooth, only one music device at a time is supported. So in the case of my Husky which has no audio panel I link my Bose A20 headset to the GDL 52 by Bluetooth for SXM music. The back seater can't do the same since only one wireless music pairing at a time is allowed. I could install a monaural audio input jack on the panel but don't think it's worth the effort since the intercom is a high-noise model optimized for voice quality over fidelity. Voices are legible but snary compared to stereo intercoms. The direct Bluetooth connection to the Bose A20 sounds fantastic.

I would think that a device marketed for portable aviation use would be optimized for minimal hard flightdeck interface and maximum wireless portable support. The unit's Bluetooth can talk to two navigation devices concurrently but only one music device. Given the choice this is the best route since music should be the least important item in flight. And it is still a great improvement over prior portable models. Maybe the music device limitation is inherent within industry Bluetooth standards. No matter the reason it still feels rude to exclude the back seater.

Just an observation for the purpose of a heads up for others. I am very happy with the 52.

Default GPSMAP 696

Question for Garmin or anyone who knows:

Will this new unit work (via serial) with GPSMap 696? Functionality / features supported?

Thanks in advance

Iím disappointed there is no ForeFlight support. Are they working on adding this support or is that not the case?

I believe it's Foreflight that has chosen not to support the new improved GDL50/51/52 interface for traffic and weather, and I let them know about.

Hello Kevin,

No, but of course you can connect a GDL 39/39R for ADS-B traffic/weather and/or a GXM 42 for SXM Weather/Music to your GPSMAP 696.

Thanks,
Steve

Two questions:

1) It isn't clear in the docs (to me). Is the GDL-50R plug compatible, data and power, with a GDL-39 3D? I have mine hardwired to a 795 and ships power.

2) Can the unit be vertically or does it need to be essential horizontal?

thanks,

Hello,

The GDL 50 is plug compatible with the GDL 39 3D.

The GDL 50R uses a 15 pin D-Sub connector (connector kit p/n 010-12498-60).

The unit should be mounted horizontally.

Please contact us by email or phone if you have any additional questions.

Thanks,
Steve

When will the GDL50R start shipping? I've had one on order through Garmin Europe since the product was announced.
