Flying topless

Here's a wacky question a friend asked me and I don't have an answer so I'm throwing it out to you experts.
Can I remove the sliding canopy from my -9A and still fly the aircraft? Legally? practically?

There was an article in a flying magazine of a guy that did it with his RV-6. He made a cover for the baggage area to keep the air flowing smoothly over the aft cabin section.

I was hoping that's what it meant. Nothing personal, but I really don't want to see most of you guys topless.
