Aluminum to Glass Rear Skirt

Bayou Bert

Well Known Member
I am in the process of getting my 9A ready for the paint shop.
The rear skirt (alum) is not good. I intend to remove and replace
with fiberglass. Dust off fiberglass skills from building.
I have searched the forum a good bit but can't find the info
I need. I don't intend to use carbon.
So....what is the recommended weight of glass and number of
layers for a good rear skirt?
After glass I intend to coat with micro for a good sanded finish and
corners.

All recommendations appreciated.

Thanks

Rutan Glass - five layers

I used five layers of Rutan glass plain weave, aka bi-directional, aka BID. This plain weave will not form compound curves like satin will but it's great for the rear skirt... you can cut it rectangular and it will form into the shape you need with no problem.

Five layers layed up one at a time with peel ply on top each time. I cut parallel/perpendicular to the fibers; a structural part you would more likely alternate layers parallel and 45 deg. Came out .060" thick for the five layers and .100" at the overlap in the middle where there are ten layers. Weighs 2 lbs including microballoon filler added to fill the duct tape ripples and fill a gap that opened up between skirt and turtle deck at fuselage centerline.
