Question Page 29-04 Step 13 - Why seal the canopy rib bases?

Has anybody got a theory, or have talked to Van's, as to the purpose of sealing the bottom of the canopy rib assemblies? It is not open to the engine compartment, so why?

Aha! Now I get it. The outside of those panels could be exposed to water because of the way the canopy hinges there. Thanks Scott.
