Can you rebuild a starter

Starter went out and replaced with new. Is my old of any value, broken or repaired? Could my local starter shop fix this ? I understand some shy away from aviation stuff.

Yes any good starter/ alt shop should have the parts to rebuild it. Weather they will is an open question.around here the stock answer is it's for my airboat.

There was a starter shop here that had a sign above the counter. "If it's from an airplane don't even put it on the counter."

Starters

I took a lot of starters, generators, alternators to a shop in Ft. Worth and they were all fixed and worked for hundreds of hours. 5 to 10 day turn around. She would say when I took it to the counter, ?I suppose this is off of an airplane?. It might be, but they always worked. Most were certified airplanes.

Ball Bearings can be replaced.

Brushes can be replaced.

Commutators can be cleaned/resurfaced.

Electrical contacts can be replaced.

If it's not the windings, you can do all that yourself.

Although bushed bearings may be harder than ball bearings.
