What PCU-5000X governor?

Carl Froehlich

Well Known Member
I'm helping a friend with his RV-14 project. He called to order a PCU-5000X governor but was unable to tell them what model he needed.

He has a stock IO-390 engine from Van's with the forward governor mount. He has a special made two blade prop but it uses a new, stock Hartzell hub. The blades are not counterweighted.

Suggestions?

According to an application sheet I found (not on line, sorry) that engine needs:

.947 to 1 drive ratio
2700 takeoff rpm

And you'll also need to tell them if oil runs the prop to high or low pitch.

The problem is, PCU is the only group that thinks that's the proper ratio. The one that Van's is selling is not of that ratio. And Lycoming told me that the .947:1 was not correct.

So be careful. They will tell you and verify that it is correct, but it isn't necessarily "correct". It will work I'm sure, but it isn't the "proper" ratio from all the other data sources (MT, Lycoming, Hartzell) that I talked to also.
