p-mag setup mode question

When wired as suggested by my p-mag manual, does the p-mag go into setup mode every time the battery bus is activated?

From page 14:

2. Setup Mode is entered by turning 12 volt buss power ON, WHILE the p-lead switch is OFF (grounded). ...

If so, I guess this is not an issue, although it seems a bit strange. If the p-leads are activated before the battery is turned on, would it avoid the p-mag going into the setup mode?

Not an issue because steps 3 & 4 has to happen to change the setup.

3. Blow into the MAP sensor tube (see note below for duration and pressure). After the first blow, the ignition will acknowledge by switching the LED to from solid RED to blinking RED.

4. Blow into the MAP sensor tube a second time, and the LED will blink GREEN indicating the ignition timing has been set.

Correct, maybe.

If your P-mags have version 40, which has been the current version for the past three years then the setup is performed as follows. This assumes you have them wired per the manual.

When you turn on the master and the P-mags are powered up with the P lead grounded, then blowing in the MAP twice will set the timing.

With Version 40, if the propeller moves once they are in setup mode, you cannot set the timing.

Thus, you must move the prop to Top Dead Center, turn on your master, ground the P lead, and then blow in the MAP tube twice to set the timing.

If the P-Lead is not grounded (I have no idea what you mean by "activated".) and you power up the P-mags, they will not go into setup mode.

The following is from the P-mag manual, pages 13 & 14.

Set Ignition Timing:
Install the ignition(s) in the accessory case at any attitude that is convenient. You won’t need to move them again so secure them for operation. Temporarily remove the MAP sensor tube connection where it attaches to your aircraft system (not at the ignition itself).

1. Rotate your prop to the engine TDC (or TC) timing mark (see exception Note 4) . By approaching this mark with the prop moving in the direction of normal engine rotation you can minimize play in the gears.

2. Setup Mode is entered by turning 12 volt buss power ON, WHILE the plead switch is OFF (grounded). If the LED is not lit up, you are not in Setup Mode.

5. Power cycle (12 volt power OFF then ON) to enable operation and, provided the prop has not moved, verify you still see a green LED. Reconnect the MAP sensor tube to its operating location.

Check your PM's.
