USA: South Dakota

Mt. Rushmore

Where's the best place to stay when visiting these places? Looking at flying commercial and going in mid Sept. Any other area info or good sources of area info would be highly appreciated.

Custer SD

We landed at Custer SD on our way to Oshkosh and was very impressed. Custer is very close to both Crazy Horse and Mount Rushmore. Not sure if there is commercial service into Custer. Rapid City is also very close and it definitely has commercial service.

Here is a picture of the town of Custer.

I was working in the Colorado and WY during last month. Crazy horse is a must see and also Mount Rushmore. Also this is a beautiful area. The town of Deadwood is close also, and very rustic and also has lots of antiques shops and casinos. I stayed in Rapid City and drove around the area. For the motorcycle crowd Sturgis is real close.
Next fly across WY and see Yellow Stone and the Great Tetons and Jackson Hole. Cody WY is at the east side of Yellow Stone and has a great airport with rental cars. ( I wasn't working too hard). :)

Pierre, SD

Did a weekend trip to Pierre, SD. The Captain and I were told that the best steak could be found at The Cattlemen's Club. We were not disappointed and decided to have dinner there our second night as well!

KRAP (Rapid City) and hotels

We spent 5 days there last month. Friendly airport and efficient staff at the FBO. National Car rentals delivered the car directly to the FBO.

If you have a car, Rapid City is convenient to the Black Hills attractions and makes a good base for exploring. Downtown is quite active, and I can recommend the FireHouse Brewery and Murphy's Irish Pub....:)

I presume with the short season, Rapid City seems to be expensive on hotels. We discovered (too late) that the FBO (Westjet Center) can make bookings at the Alex Johnson hotel downtown. This refurbished 1920's hotel is quite grand and elegant, but the on-line booking site said it was all booked up.

The hotel desk clerk said to ignore the web site, and the FBO can get you discounted rooms (only $10 more that the EconoLodge!!)

Wish we knew that earlier...

As a side note - the chief accountant and co-pilot wouldn't take my picture straddled on the dummy nuclear bomb on display at the Ellsworth AFB museum - just like in Dr. Strangelove... spoilsport:)

Rapid City....

Gotta love that identifier! Just as memorable as Sioux City's.......

I stopped at KCUT for fuel on the way from Memphis to Seattle and found a great guy in charge there named Ralph who was on his way to lunch and offered me a ride to town. There are no facilities at KCUT but it's a nice little valley town like the picture above shows and is just over the hill from Crazyhorse and Rushmore. Devil's Tower is just North West of there a few minutes.

Custer,SD

We thought a quick trip to the southern Black Hills was in order so I called the KCUT airport and spoke to "Shannon" (the lady in charge). She said they had fuel, a rental car and hangar space so off we went. This lady is very accommodating to say the least. In town we found several nice motels to choose from and several very good places to eat. I would highly recommend KCUT as a fuel/overnight stop to all RVers.

how low can you fly

I flew to this area a few years ago and stayed away from the attractions mentioned ( tower, rushmore) because I figured there had to be restrictions on flying over them. I plan to go over yellowstone this year but woukd like to know if there are any restrictions ( they might be on sectionals but the wac charts didnt show anything. anyone know?

I'm at work (you can tell because I'm on this site):):), but I think the min. vertical seperation is 2000' and the lateral limits are defined on the Cheyenne Sectional for the monument. Devils Tower is different I believe, I think flights are restricted within a 3nm radius, period!! Please confirm this before you go. All that being said the Hills are a nice place to visit both on the ground and in the air.

This is correct. If you get closer then 3 miles the Big Indian Chief will come to the airport (W43) to give everybody there hard time (if she can find a flyer there) :)

Black Hills Rental Cars since Enterprise will NOT pick you up...

We have planned a side trip to Rapid City (KRAP) on our way to Oshkosh and need a car for a few days while we there. The "big" rental companies are once again fixing the price at the airport over what you can rent the same car for 7 miles away... but Black Hills Rental Cars came to our rescue with pickup and drop off at the FBO. See the whole story in our blog post... http://wp.me/p2mcvj-aT
