Superbloom flights

My daughter was on Spring break this week and wanted to get out to the desert to see the flowers. Saturday we flew into Agua Caliente (L54) and hit the hot springs for a soak and a bit of hiking to/from the airstrip. After weeks of cold, wet weather, the skies cleared and we actually warmed up a bit this weekend.

Sunday we flew up to visit family in Orange County and on the way up we could see that the hills east of Lake Elsinore were just covered in orange flowers. We detoured on the way back and flew over the hills, which were just amazing.

Ages ago, I was living in Lancaster, CA, on the Mojave desert. One day I rented an old Champ and flew it out to the west end of the valley. I'll never forget the poppy superbloom.

I was flying at a few hundred feet, and spent quite some time flying lazy circles over the flowers.

Glad to catch you and your daughter at Ramona before I flew back to Mesa (FFZ). Flight was a little bumpy getting over mountains to Salton Sea with 10-12 kts headwinds, but at 11500 the rest of the trip was quite smooth with only 5-6 kts.

It was a beautiful weekend in Ramona, and EPIC (FBO) was very supportive, great service. Look forward to a future trip. Fantastic photos of superbloom.

I flew down to San Diego from Lincoln this weekend, over the Cajon Pass and just by the southern tip of Lake Elsinore. We were amazed at the blooms and my wife was taking pictures like crazy. I don't remember when I've seen it like that before. Great picture.

This made the ABC news tonight. Reason: They said there was so many people there, they had no room for parking.;)

Ya

I went down to san diego two weeks ago for family sports; freeway was a mess then too. Couldnt believe all the people who turned out to look.

If anyone have RV air pictures of the Lancaster poppy fields, please share.

Bruce, if is taking away from your post, I can delete it.

I guess I don't get originality points for taking my wife to see the flowers from the air but......

I was probably 20 miles out when I spotted the flowers, even in the haze they were bright. Once we got closer we noticed the traffic jams. Cars for miles and miles. My wife says "OMG look at the traffic jams, glad we are flying". I said "well you look all you want, I have to fly and deal with my traffic jam". It was craziness out there.

Pics don't do it justice. The scale of ground covered is un-explainable.

Nice! My wife and I just went yesterday. We hiked Walker Canyon a few years ago to see the Spring Bloom, but this year we saw it from a slightly different perspective. ;)
