Page 28-07 step 4 and figure 2 - wrong nutplates?

Page 28-07 step 3 is to machine countersink the #40 holes in the F-14133-1 cowl attach plates. Figure 2 shows 14X machine countersink. There are only 14 #40 holes in this part, including the nutplate mounting holes.

Step 4 is to rivet the nutplates onto F-14133-1. But figure 2 calls for K1000-08D nutplates, which are dimpled and thus won't sit flat on top of the F-14133-1 which is countersunk on the opposite side.

Should these nutplates be K1000-08?

You've identified an error in the plans. The history of this error is as follows.

The original 0.04" F-14133 parts were thinner. Van's found that it was prone to cracking. So a thicker 0.063" part, F-14133-1 (hence the -1) was provided around Nov-15 to builders with the thinner parts. Subsequent kits shipped after this time were provisioned with the thicker parts.

The thinner F-14133 was thin enough to accept a dimple, hence the stale K1000-08D reference in the plans. The thicker F-14133-1 is too thick for a dimple.

Use K1000-08 for the countersunk F-14133-1.
Use K1000-08D for the dimpled F-14133.

Thanks for verifying my finding. I'll carry on accordingly. It's nice to know the history of these things, as well.

Just by way of update, the kit at this point has 5 remaining K1000-08 nutplates and 6 are needed for this step. So I will just order a half-dozen along with probably $500 of other stuff from Aircraft Spruce. Happy building, everyone!

Further update: The plans call for AN426AD3-4.5 rivets through the firewall lower flange, cowl shim, and cowl attach plate. We found these to be too short and used AD3-5 rivets instead.
