How To Get In/Out of a RV-12...

Another slow day today… I did something I’ve wanted to do for some time now. Most people know this, but I thought I’d put together a little video showing an easy way to exit the RV-12. Maybe we can keep more of us old duffers flying if we can egress the airplane without going through too many gymnastics.

Two years ago my wife broke her ankle getting out of our 12. She was standing up on the wing and missed the step and fell to the ground pinning her ankle. See photo of pretty pink cast…

Pilot Getting In –

Left foot on step
Right foot on wing walk
Left foot placed on floor next to control stick
Right foot placed on floor next to control stick

Pilot Exit Procedure –

• Scoot your butt up the seat back
• Move your butt onto the side longeron
• Raise left leg over the longeron and place it down onto the exit step
• Now sit up straight and raise right leg over the longeron
• Remove left leg from exit step and place right leg onto the exit step
• With left foot, step off the front of the wing with your body facing forward

Easier done than said, watch the videos…

exit strategy

Today, i tried the exit process, and would like to say that it is quite a bit easier than standing up in the cockpit method.

Thanks for nice tip!

I wouldn't place too much weight on the angled rail without the added doubler some people have added.
