Williamsburg-Jamestown Airport (KJGG)

On-field restaurant called "Charly's". Located right in the main terminal. Not a big place, but food is terrific. Recently expanded ramp allows good parking. A great lunch run.

KJGG, Charley's: arrive early

Got swamped two days ago with an unexpected holiday week rush. EVERY soup gone by 2pm, among other stuff. Had to settle for a BLT and Hot Dog.

Still good, though. And a nice chat with Miss Jean about the future of the airport.

Weirwood, VA: Campbell Field's (9VG) Soup-On-Sunday

Weirwood, VA: Campbell Field's (9VG) Soup-On-Sunday

A really nice little grass strip on Virginia's Eastern Shore. Mere minutes from the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay. Without the food, this is still one cool destination. :D

Every Sunday, weather permitting, they do a "Soup-On-Sunday" fly-in with homemade chili, hot dogs, and the like. The food is great, the hosts are fantastic, and the camraderie is amazing. The airport's website has updates on the next fly-in, and the airport owner keeps a nice photo record of the planes and people who fly in.

Check it out: http://www.campbellfieldairport.com/

We flew in with about 6 planes from Warrenton-Fauquier airport (W66) back on December 31, 2006. I snapped a few pics of the event, and you can see them here: http://taildraggersinc.com/Gallery/Soup_on_Sunday.htm

Luray Caverns / W45

You could almost walk to the Caverns from the airport -- which are well worth seeing, but no need ... there is a great shuttle from the airport. The shuttle will also take you into town, where there are a variety of restaurants. Fuel is cheap.

What more could you want? Great stop!

FCI - Chesterfield County

Dickie's restaurant (Kings Korner) is open M - F 1100 - 1400 and Sunday 1030 - 1430. The buffet is $8.95 per person including drinks, salad bar, breakfast bar, dinner bar (things like BBQ, stew, fried chicken, veggies) and desert bar.

KJGG - Jamestown Airport and Charly's Restaurant

It was destined to be busy at any east coast airport with a cafe / diner / restaurant and Williamsburg Jamestown Airport (KJGG) was no exception today!

They had both floors of tables and the outside patio with patrons. Even with all the customers, they "food crew" did a great job!

Their home made bread rolls they use for all of their sandwitches is fantastic and if you get their early enough, they sell the day-olds for 50c. I only score one bavarian roll as a patron 15 minutes early pretty much cleaned the, out.

I highly recommend adding Charly's to your sprint / summer destination list. Its lunch only so dont arrive too early in the day :)

Check the AFD as the airport has right traffic for RWY13.

A short walk into town. Renowned for Crab Cakes.

Visited recently. Great spot. Nice walk through little town. Plenty of places to eat. Cemeteries add some spookiness :D

Great stop! Jim, the airport manager will gladly give you a ride to Caverns and back. Call him Mr Ambassador he completed VA Aviation Passport program on Gold level.

Tickets to the Caverns are not cheap at $28 but well worth it.

Don?t overlook Shannon Airport (KEZF) at Fredericksburg. The Shannon Air Museum is a labor of love for many local pilots, and has at least one plane that you will not find anywhere else - the Vultee V1 plane.

Virginia Highlands KVJI - Nicewonder Farms & Vineyards Bristol Va

So my daughter found this vineyard on Instagram three days ago and sent it to us. The weather looked great so we said “What the heck, let’s go!” I looked on the map to find it (Southwest VA in Bristol) and KVJI is 6 miles away. Called the hotel at the vineyard to see about a transfer, they said sure. Apparently the owner commutes in via jet. It was a 2 hour flight battling a 40kn headwind, with a airmet Tango under 8k feet. At 8500 the air was smoother with a bit of mountain waves crossing the blueridge.
The passenger van was waiting when we arrived. The fuel truck pulled up to refuel us as we were unloading the luggage. We were booked for two nights at the property so of course my wife packed her own bag. The FBO could not have been more friendly or helpful. VJI does not charge tiedown fees for experimental or if buying fuel.
The resort is the most beautiful hotel/winery I’ve been to! Excellent wines, the on-site restaurant is outstanding. Rooms are not cheap at 450/night but includes breakfast which is a real breakfast- the biscuits and gravy are perfect after too much wine the night before.
Highly recommend. We will be back. The spa is slated to open this summer. Next door and part of this property is The Virginian Golf Club. I don’t golf anymore so didn’t check it out. Will post a few more pics later.
