I thought I'd post my method of making inspecting the oil pickup screen mess free. I inspect the screen every oil change.
I use a simple trough made from aluminum flashing:
I remove some heater duct hoses, an adel clamp on a fuel line, and add a temporary zip tie to keep the fuel line out of the way. Don't be afraid of moving stuff out of the way, it takes longer to contemplate it sometimes than to simply do it. Here you can see oil running down the trough:
Here's looking at the screen, partially out, in the "go find something else to do while it drains" position:
When it has stopped dripping from the engine, I simply put a paper towel on the end of the trough and remove it.
