SDS EFI for Continental IO-550

For you F1 Rocket/ EVO fans considering Conti 550 power, we're about to release our new EFI/EI kit for these engines next week. Most of the components were tested on Andy Findlay's turbo Legacy at Reno this year which saw over 400 mph on telemetry at one point.

Here's a few photos of some of the components:

Fuel block, Hall sensor and mount

Coil pack mounts

You can see the layout on Andy's engine here. Our supplied injector bosses must be welded onto the intake runners. Most folks plan to retain the factory TB.

Many thanks to Andy and Mark (F1Boss) for their help in developing and testing some of these parts.

Production parts are all machined now and at the anodizer. Should have a complete system photo here next week. Just working on the installation documentation now. Plan is to be ready for sale by mid Nov.

We expect the pricing to be several hundred $ below the Lycoming system price since the injector mountings are less expensive, the crank sensor mounts are simpler, no drilling guides are required for the magnet mounting and no TB is supplied.

For racers, we can supply larger injectors and 3 Bar MAP sensors permitting up to 90 inches MAP and 1000hp. With the standard dual board ECU, you have the full individual cylinder trimming capability and redundant backup.

Kit Completed

We finally have all the CNC'd parts completed for the Conti IO-550 EFI/EI kit. This is available only in a dual ECU configuration.

Documentation and pricing will be done in a few days. We were fortunate that many of the Lycoming part designs could be used with minor modifications to fit the Conti.

Power supply

For any Continental guys out there, we now can supply 28V to 14V fan cooled, power converters rated at 30 amps at 30C (22 amps at 40C). We just finished some testing on one here and are happy with the performance.

1.5 pounds weight and 6 X 3.5 X 2 inches footprint.

New Install

This is a new EM-5 install on a local 550 powered Rocket showing the vertical coil mounting option.

It's allowed us to test fit some of our new CNC'd parts we've developed for these over the winter and we'll have a couple more new parts to make the install easier by late April.

Clean install of dual ECU, injector relay box and dual MAP sensors by Ralph Inkster.

It takes some creative planning to get all the bits installed for good access later in the limited space available.

What is to cost on one of these kits? and aside from fuel lines, what else needs to be purchased to complete the install?

Thanks,
D

The kit price is $7090US with all options (dual ECU, fuel trim, PC data logging and fuel flow). Other than maybe a few bolts and Adel clamps, you should have everything you need to do the install. Wiring harnesses come pre-made to your length specs and we usually leave one end unterminated for easier firewall passage and length tailoring.

There are some choices in coil mounts and fuel blocks depending on preferences and we have some new parts coming out next week which will make the install a bit easier.

The injector bosses must be Tig welded to the intake runners.

More CNC'd bits for the 550

It takes a while to get these new designs drafted and done but we've finally completed phase 2 parts on the IO-550 EFI kits.

We have the revised, vertical coil mounts for more intake runner and plug wire clearance, mag drive gear supports, revised Hall sensor mount to fit both block types, mag dummy shaft, CHT sensor mounts and low profile Hall sensor body.

Update

It's taken a while for Ralph Inkster to get this project done. His time is always in great demand doing work on many customer RVs and helping with EAA training projects.

We had a spot of good weather after some snow and cold so it was time to pull the F1 out and give it the juice.

Hopefully the weather will be good for the next few days and we can shoot some more vids and photos. Still some more work to do but at least it's running now.:)
