Salmon River- Block Island - Old Rhinebeck

So we get an invitation from Mark DiTommaso by way of Turbo for some free burgers and hot dogs at 9B8 Salmon River. This coincides with the same weekend for the Old Rhinebeck EAA appreciation weekend, so Shirley and I do the eAPIS thing, file a flight plan and fly to 9B8 with a short stop at KOGS Ogdensburg for customs. What a beautiful Saturday to be out flying. Thanks go to our hosts.

Block Island KBID

Same Saturday (Aug. 29) afternoon, we flew over to Block Island just north east of Long Island. Walked into town, had ice cream, and then headed back to the airport later in the afternoon (no lodging to be had). Flew up to Hartford-Brainard airport (KHFD), and stayed for the night. Accommodations near the tourist areas were in high demand, but everything ends up being a short hop and a skip away when you have an airplane.

Old Rhinebeck NY94

Sunday morning we leave KHFD for NY94 Old Rhinebeck. We had prior permission and all the info on how to land. There is only a middle section of the field off to the right that is useable, unless you have some balloon tires :) What great fun that place is, to see such antique machines actually flying.

Old Rhinebeck NY94 - part two

Old Rhinebeck has quite a little museum going. Lots of volunteer hours going on to maintain the place.

Shirley volunteered for the fashion parade and was given the opportunity to ride in an old fashioned electric car. The electric car just never caught on I guess.

Above photo is from our flight back KSCH to CYOW. They were calling for low ceilings in Ottawa so we flew IFR just above the clouds.

alfio, nice wite-up. glad you could make it down from canada for some fun. the rvs made the event a big hit with our host. they probably doubled the attendance.

Shirley cuts quite a figure in that hat, being toured around in the electric car. Terrific write-up, Alfio. Wonderful inspiration for those of us still building in hopes of using our flying carpets to take us on similar adventures.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, I spent 7 hours yesterday sanding composite parts. Ugh.

Some of the the Embrun COPA members went there last year, sure looks like a fun place to visit! It's on my list of destinations ... one day!

Bucket list thing to do... check!

I did attend Charlie's presentation on Rhinebeck last year. It was that presentation that gave us the inspiration to come visit.

This year though, Rhinebeck invited visiting aircraft to land on the field for one weekend (with prior permission) as part of EAA appreciation weekend. We were told that a dozen aircraft were there on Saturday. We came in followed by an RV-7 as the only flying visitors on Sunday. I believe they are planning to make this a yearly event.

Our RV in same image as the flying Hanriot at Rhinebeck. Priceless. (screen capture of Hanriot from our video link https://youtu.be/dsYJXEj3KtE)
