GNS480 to 396/496 Transfer?

Brain Trust,

We all know that a single wire interface will allow the flight plan info to be transferred from 430/530 to the Garmin portable 396-496. Just works.

Does anyone know if the 480 can be similarly configured? Since it will work the MX-20, it seems hopeful.

Or.... has anyone actually done this?

Bill,

I think this should work based on a quick document review. You would want to wire the RS-232 out of the GNS 480 and set the port to "MAPCOM". NOTE: The 480 can only support the "MAPCOM" format on port 1 and port 5.

On your Garmin portable, you would want wire it to the RS-232 In port and configure the input to "Aviation In".

Based on my review of the GNS 480 install manual, MAPCOM appears to be the early version of the Aviation In protocol.

Good luck. If you try it, please report back here and let us know how it works.

Thanks,
Levi

Works as advertised

I have a 480 and it works exactly the way described with no issues. I now send the flight plan to both a Dynon Skyview and a GRT Mini. Works great!
