Cowling Scribe Lines

The scribe lines on the lower cowl at the front could be misleading. The illustration shows an angle cut-off. In pairing the two cowlings it shows a gap would be created if the entire scribed angle were cut. This does not look correct???

The drawing is correct.

Set your spinner on the cowl.... you will find that the opening resulting from the trim line is way inside the profile of the spinner, and it will not be visible.

Trimming as shown makes the cowl removal installation much easier.
 
Don't overlook the lower cowel opening (oil cooler / radiator cooling air inlet ) scribe line. I have found 2 flying RV 12s that had not had the lower opening opened up to the scribe line. Luckily it was before paint!

We have looked at the lower cowl scrib line at the forward inboard edge and cannot figure out why it is there. We have completed fitting the cowl halves to the airplane and each other and have yet to make this cut. So far, at least it does not appear to be needed.

Make sure you do cut the angled portion from the lower cowl. If you don't, when you try to remove the lower cowl after the airplane is completed, you will scratch the spinner. Next time you see "New Blue" at a fly in, take a look at her spinner. It has some scratches from this.
