Chucking Reamers Drill Speeds ...

Hi Crew,

This one is for the technical boffins amongst you ... what are the preferred drill speeds for #30 and #40 reamers?

Cheers,

Matt

Technically, the formula for calculating drill speed is 4 X cutting speed of material (in surface feet per minute) / cutting tool diameter in inches.
Example:
cutting speed of mild steel = 100 sfpm
#30 drill = .128
so..
4X100/.128= 3125 RPM. If this seems fast it's because these numbers are assuming ideal conditions i.e. machine tools and lubricant.

Feed rate is a whole 'nother calculation having to do with chip load, number of cutting edges, etc. For our purposes, you can tell when you're feeding (pushing) right by the shape of the chip; too light you get powder or thin threads; too course you get fat ragged chips.

For reaming the formula is twice the feed rate and half the RPM.

TMI? Go slow use BoeLube.

Reamer Speeds

Hi All,

Thanks for the feedback ... i'm glad i asked the questions - i was under the impression that it was similar to drill speeds. Whew !!! - imagine the mess i would have created. So much for getting more accurate holes

cheers,

Matt
