intercom noise

The pilot side can barely hear the copilot apparently due to noise. We took the RV-12 to an avionics specialist. He listened to the problem, swapped headsets with his known to operate properly sets and he said that the Flightcom 403 Intercom is bad. Also, with higher engine rpm, there's greater noise on both sides. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Did the specialist remove the connector from the intercom and check all wiring and grounds? Any problems with your transmitted audio and/or received audio from the radio?

Look at my post in the following thread. At a minimum, remove the connector from the intercom and "ring out" the wiring between the intercom and the pilot and co-pilot jacks with an ohmeter. Check to ensure you have no shorts to the airframe as you check each wire. Ensure all pins in the connector are in the proper position. Ensure the insulating washer is properly positioned on both microphone jacks. The headphone jack should be grounded at its location. Ensure the pins in the intercom connector are properly seated.

Until you or the specialist has completed all of these steps, you really cannot conclude the intercom is bad.

Use the forum search and you will find a bunch of posts on "noise".

I had the same issue. It turned out to be headset jacks were not properly grounded. Double check these jacks.

Is this a new build Skyview system, or a conversion of an existing D-180 system?

Per 42D-15 rev 1 released 3/5/12, Note 1, Vans has isolated both mic and headset jacks from the seatpans and run the grounds back to the 50000 Control Module.

Multiple grounds are often problematic and this may be another case. There have been multiple postings about situations similar to yours. You might want to isolate the jacks and run wires to a common ground - either in the Skyview box, or another central location.
