Coax Construction

Can a male D-sub pin be substituted for the pin supplied in the B&C coax connector bag?

I tried - and retried - to crimp the supplied pin with a D-sub crimper and it didn't turn out well. I now have connectors without pins - but also have a lot of male D-sub pins.

Replacement pins can be purchased from BandC.aero, DigiKey and Mouser. The latter two are less expensive. Shipping+pin from BandC would likely be close to the cost of a new connector kit.

A D-sub crimper is not the proper tool for crimping BNC or TNC pins. You'll need one of these:

Visit Stein Air and look at the support section for video on crimping rg-400

( coming from a rookie,...my only comment,... the video shows you where the pin crimp is on the tool,... I found turning the cable opposite of what is shown in the video yields more consistent result. The ?big area? shown in the video holds the insulation,...and conductor is then straight for a good crimp)

Also,..if you look at digi-key or other suppliers on-line,... they will have the vendor dwg so you can confirm CRIMP SIZE, and lengths of cutback.... of course you will need vendor and part number

Last,... follow the video,.. be sure to clean the stray cable shield off before assembly,...and check for ground before final crimp 🤬

Coax Crimper

Thanks for the replies. I had an expensive coax crimper during the build (2005-2011) but lent it to a fellow airport bum a few years ago and can't remember who that guy was. Getting cheaper in my old age and didn't want to have to do the obvious - purchase the right tool (again).
