Cost of smoke oil getting too expensive to use. Does anyone know a good source for smoke oil with reasonable shipping costs? I'm located in Albuquerque, NM.

Skip shipping and order from your local oil distributor. "Smoke oil", despite all the claims, is generally any light paraffinic mineral oil with no additives. The old standards were Texaco Canopus 13 or Shell Carnea 10 or 22.

Postscript...most airshow folks post their requirements for show promoters, which usually includes a barrel of smoke oil. Kyle Franklin sells Pure White and Canopus 13, and posts this list on his website:

Best
Pure White Smoke Oil
Texaco/Chevron Canopus 13 or 19
Aeroshell Smoke Oil
Texaco Corvis 13

Good
Exxon Telura 613
Shell Carnea 10 or 22
Shell / Exxon Carnea E-15 (10 weight)
Shell Vitrea 13 or 22
Super-Dri Smoke Oil

Acceptable
American Rayco 460
BP - Enerpar 20 (viscosity rating of 10)
Citgo Sentry 15
Conoco / Phillips "Industrial Oil #10, #15 and #115" (10 weight)
Conoco / Phillips 80N and 70N
Meadows Concrete Form Oil (oil base), (stinks but it works)
Unocal 76 - 76 Klondyke

I've always used good old diesel. It doesn't hang around as long as smoke oil, but it produces great smoke for a heck of a lot cheaper.

Hadnt thought about it, but that make sense. After all when, Diesel engineered his engine way back when, I believe it was designed to run on peanut oil......cant be much difference in viscosity between mineral oil, peanut oil and diesel, tho I'm not a chem E........

The specific reason for using straight mineral oil is the lack of additives which may or may not be good for you. Not sayin' you should not use any particular product, but if you're smelling much smoke in the cockpit, I'd call it a reason to be cautious.

I'm told Marvin's oils are so pure he uses it to lube the pancake griddle at Petit Jean ;)

Smoke Oil

Hi, Boo,

I've been using Lottman Oil Company in Byers, Colorado. They have an agriculture oil called Trailblazer Super Smoke Oil 19. A 55 gallon drum cost me $325.00 plus $100 shipping to Pagosa Springs, CO, so it's a relative bargain. It is a normally stocked item for Lottman. Smokes great!

Their phone number is 303-915-8590

OK... NO HATE.... In a pinch I use tractor hydraulic oil from Costco / Sams club. Runs about $40 for 5 gal's. Doesn't produce nearly as much smoke as good smoke oil but it does work if you need it.
