Garmin uses hi-density D-Sub connectors in some places. Make sure you order the correct ones.
I usually get mine from SteinAir.

Check the installation manual for the component you are installing. The connector kit content description will tell you what size pin or socket is needed. Garmin uses both 20 and 22 size, military crimp.
You can source through Digikey or other supplier. I purchased size 20 through Aircraft Spruce. I think Stein also has them.

Generally if 3 or more rows of pins in the connector it will be the smaller high density pins.

I think the garmin High Density ones use male pins only - can anyone confirm that?

For this connector, it "appears" to look like a standard (not mini) d-sub db37, but I'll take the micrometer out and find out for sure.

I had already looked through the GTN 200 manual very carefully... They had a Garmin part number.

Crimp Socket Contact, Size 20, 20-24 AWG 336-00022-02

Does that help?

Thanks!

Hello Bruce,

Yes, the GTR 200 37 pin connector uses the standard density (not high density) female socket pins. 37 of those pins are supplied with the GTR 200 connector kit (011-03240-00).

If you use a Daniels AFM-8 crimper, it uses the K13-1 positioner and socket pin (336-00022-02) shown below.

The K42 positioner is used for the high density male pins (336-00021-00) used less frequently on devices like the GMA 240/245 audio panel.

Standard density connectors have 9, 15, 25, 37 pins. Usually 20-24 AWG.

High density connectors have 15, 26, 44, 62, 78 pins. Usually 22-28 AWG.

High density Male pin:

Spruce has all three variations and has probably easier shopping access for most builders...:)

Yes on Stein

...and then of course there is the folks who have them available cheaper than any of the aformentioned sources!

Thanks Stein, and as you know I do buy stuff from you. :)

However, during the final assembly and early flights of my RV-6A it seemed like I was getting 2 to 3 shipments a month from Spruce so a need for a few pins just got tacked on to the current nuts/bolts/fittings order.

PS I wish I bought stock in UPS-FedEx since they seem to be getting a lot of my $$$ anyway.

In case anyone is looking for the high density socket connectors for use with the Garmin high density pins, I believe these are the right ones: https://www.onlinecomponents.com/te-connectivity-amp-brand/2043511-10315500.html.

BTW, the Product Information Center (PIC) at TE Connectivity has absolutely excellent technical support people and I didn't have to wait at all to get to someone. They are also open late to take phone calls from the West Coast. I was VERY impressed with the level of service provided. Also the TE.com website is an excellent resource for information on MIL-SPEC parts. They even have 3D PDF views of all the products I looked at.

If you're using the Daniels "little blue" crimper (or any of their crimpers, for that matter), download their ultra-helpful tooling guide. It lists every positioner for every tool, along with the manufacturer, part number and color code for which pins/sockets the positioner is for. A very handy reference guide.

I have their open-frame crimper with the appropriate die for doing the hex crimp on the outer sleeve of RG-400 coax, as well (pin crimped w/ little blue and K13-1, IIRC).

Both are often available on Ebay for a fraction of the cost of a new one (they're pretty pricey new).
