rv-10 spark plugs

stamper

Well Known Member
Okay guys I am about to hopefully next month start up my plane for the first time and I need to order my spark plugs,
What have you guys been using for your plugs, and what gap do you find works best?
I know there are a few different plugs so just curious what has been working the best. My field elevation is 7200' so I fly high all the time.

What engine do you have in your RV-10?
Does it have low, standard, or high compression pistons?
What ignition do you have, electronic or magnetos?

Some choices

AS Bill said, it will matter on the engine and ignition. With my IO-540-D4A5 with 9:1 compression here's what I have used with success:

For mags:

REM37BY
REM40E
REM38E
REM38S (Fine wire)
All gapped to .016

I have found the Tempest to be of better, consistent quality, although Champion seems to be improving.

For Lightspeed Ignition:
BR8ES
BR8EIX
IK27
W27EMR

Gapped to .027

For Electroair:

Have tried Autolite 386, Denso L14U, and BR8ES, and am still experimenting.

Hope this helps.

Use Tempest fine wires. With the 9.5:1 I would suggest you focus more on what spark timing you are gong to use. and dial out 2 degrees of the light speed.

I also have all 12 of the Tempest REM38S (Fine wire) and love them. I have over 1,000 hrs on these plugs and all I do every 50 hours is pick out a few lead balls and re-install.
